My betta fish aren’t mating…PLEASE HELP!?
My friend and I started breeding these two betta fish we both know which is a girl and which isn’t so, don’t ask that question. We started breeding them two weeks ago. The male made his nest (but it was very small) but never engaged the female at least we know of. So, he had a full nest in this clear almost bucket shape thing (there was no light on it at night, though). The female was there to… But nothing happened at least we know of. So some idiot our neighbor decides he wants to drop a stupid freakin marble right down the middle of the nest. Then the nest dispersed into the sides of the bucket and the male stopped tending to it. We don’t know if there was any type of egg laying yet. We then moved the two betta fish into a bigger tank. The fish haven’t mated…yet. My question is will they ever mate? If they could would they becuase of different tanks? Or, will they mate because they might have already? Should I put them back in the old bucket even though the male stopped tending to the nest? How do I know that the female is ready to lay eggs?
Please help us. He is blowing bubbles but not making a nest. He is following her around. He has a great enviroment (no rocks, plants, half cut paper cup, heater is at 80-82 degrees farenheit, there is no filter, and the tank was just cleaned.) There are places for the female to hide. What are we doing wrong. We didn’t not restart the process of “conditoning” when we put the fish into a new tank… We just put them both in there considering the fact that they where in a bucket for 14 days.

put them in the bucket together and leave them there for a week at least. then check on them
you have to be patient
1. Fix your set up:
-Without a filter, don’t expect the fry to survive. You should have a sponge or box filter to maintain water quality.
-What size tank do you have them in?
2. Your fish were in a bucket for 14 days. That is a stressful environment, so take that into account. It’s best to start off with healthy fish.
-How large was the bucket?
-Was it heated?
-Was it filtered?
3. If these fish were purchased from a pet store than they are likely too old to breed successfully.
4. A female betta should not be housed with the male until both fish are ready. The female would display vertical barring, and be gravid with eggs (abdomen would be rounded), and will visibly wish to be with the male.
-It would be wiser to contain the female in a hurricane glass.
-You have too many questions to have already begun your attempt. You need to conduct more research.
