And you can never overkill your tank either with filtration. I now have a 46 gallon bow front which I will post one day, but I use the penguin 200 filter which is made for a 50 gallon tank. I run two of these so basically it's like have a 100 gallon filtration system. You of course don't need to go this far if you don't want. But I would make sure you at least have a little more filtration then required. So if have a 10 gallon tank use a 20 gallon filter Yes you should always have a filter. The are a community fish, but there should be more then just two. Generally they should be kept 6 or more or just 1. Maybe you'll have better luck, just keep an eye on them.
