Lowering phosphate level in fish tank?

I have really bad water and now I have red algae. Is there a chemical that lowers phosphates effectively? I clean it and use the drop in pouches in the filter, etc… I just have really bad water and any help is appreciated.

Does the water out of your tap have high phosphates? If so, your options are to use something like phosban (I really don’t like adding chemicals to take care of other chemicals) or getting an R/O unit to create filtered water for you.

If your phosphates are low from the tap, then you simply need to change the water more often or lower the number of fish in the tank.

The best way to pull them out is to use phosphate pads. They are inexpensive and reuseable. One will last a year. You get a sheet and cut it to fit your filter. Piggyback the filters and just wash the phospate pad out. This is the safest way and doesn’t add funky chemicals to your fish’s water.
