Is aquarium gravel the same as the lava rock gravel for indoor propane fireplaces? Can they be interchanged?

I am having trouble finding the lava gravel for my indoor propane fireplace. The type with fake logs etc…

I can find aquarium gravel at all kinds of stores, such as Wal-Mart. I believe it is also lava rock. The back of the bag said it could be used in an ashtray.

Are these one and the same??

Thanks

Only thing with lava rocks is that they are porous and allow air circulation.

Garden man is right, lava rock is porous, little holes all through it. This would make it a poor choice for aquariums, since it would get filled with uncleanable goo. You should be able to find lava rocks for your propane fireplace at any store that has gas grille supplies. Your fireplace is not much different from the grilles on everyone’s decks.

No, they are not the same. The rock in your fireplace is specifically treated to withstand the high heat of a fireplace. While you could take that rock and put it in an aquarium, you CANNOT put the rock from an aquarium into the fireplace. The rock intended for the aquarium may contain rocks with high moisture content. When subjecting aquarium rocks to the intense heat of the fireplace the water in the rock will expand and they may explode. Use rock rated to go in the fireplace only.
