my sump is kinda of like yours i have a regualuar aquarium for a sump with a rubbermaid in it with holes in the bottom and my overflow goes in it and it works really well never seen any body have the same setup as me it cheap and easy and it works+
I agree that the I used is not an expensive piece of equipment – but I did save money – and it does perform as well as any other $500 sump would have. Thankyou.
I don’t like durso – they are kind of finiky – if you don’t get the hole in the top just right, you constantly have an air sucking sound. Plus, I didn’t buy that type of overflow kit.
that sump is ghetto, why not use a durso pipe in the overflow box its much quieter
lol..awesome. Great tank and video man.
I get very nervous while on camera or in front of people – so I start talking fast. lol! I can’t help it unless I practice. I just did this stuff out of the blue one day while there weren’t any customers in the shop.
Hindsight is 20/20. Best I could have done was to shine a flashlight in there, and that probably would have created a huge glare. All it is is a couple of bulkheads in the overflow…
Thank you for that clarification!
I agree. But, I think it was a pretty good vid, considering the crappy camera I had to work with and a very inexperienced person working the camera.
It practically was. lol!
Yeah, for the time that I had the system up and running it did really well. The only thing I would do differently is having a larger sump for a refugium and a larger protein skimmer.
lol, I don’t think that I sound like that in my head,… oh well… m’kaay
Maybe I will in the future. I don’t know if I am or not. I’m going through a transition stage in my life right now – so we will see.
rubber maid is the brand of the container.
I like how you use Valves to control flow rate. As for the “Rubber Maids” I am not certain as to what you’re referring to. Is it a box/container or a pump made by Rubber Maid?
I would have liked to have known and been able to see that over-flow part better – as I we saw was Black.
The Layout of the system is nice – it is straight runs that have a lot of room so that if something goes wrong, there is room to fix.
The only problem I see what this video, is that there needs to be more light – the person holding onto the camera needs to let US the viewers See what you are pointing to and talking about. There were a few several times where we can’t see.
But, I will commend you on using someone else to hold the camera – Smart! Your explanation of things is good, just slow it down a bit. OF all of the videos so far, this one has serious potential of being damned good!
that tank looks like it a day old haha
thanks bro. good idea
i will do the same thing aswell
can you say m’kaay ? come on.. just once.
dude thank you so much that cleared most my questions!!! also can you make a video on making a sump? for freshwater…and if you put heaters and filters in your sump with your tank water be ok? will it be filtrated and will the water tempurture be the same in the tank as it flows out?? PR
Thanks,
Peace, Chris
Thank you, Thank you. I’m going to have to make another video pretty soon on how to set up a small reef system 30g and under with a sump.
awsome vid man. this clears up a lot
Yes, there are small air pumps that will re-prime the siphon action if the electricity turns off.
However, if you don’t match up the correct pump gph with the overflow gph, you will get air bubbles to stop in the top of the siphon and that will cause siphon loss, and your air pump will not recognize this.
The whole point of me recommending internal overflows is that external overflows have too many things that can go wrong for the average/beginner aquarist. If it works for you, do it!
i agree with the worry free part but i have a mini water /air pump to re-prime the overflow box when it gets unluged or the hydro goes out so no worries
Unfortunately, it is difficult to install in a tank that is already set up. You should be able to talk to your live fish store and tell them on the next tank that you want a corner overflow box. (I also suggest to get an oversized drain, 1 1/2″)
If you take your tank apart, and do not have tempered glass, you can drill a hole in the glass yourself or have a professional glass company do it for you. Install a bulkhead and your ready to go!
How can i install a internal overflow box to my tank?
