I’m moving! What should I do with my fish!?

Okay, I have a fully mature 55 gallon saltwater aquarium, and I’m moving out of my home(good bye mom) to somewhere about four hours away… and moving the entire set up is just ridiculous.

If I could, I would just bye a whole new set-up, while leaving my current tank at home and set up the new one. After it cycles, just transport my fish to the new one. I’ve been meaning to get a new tank anyway since my current tank is specialty and I want some more diversity.

Only one problem, I have three Dragon Pipefish and I trust no one here to take care of them correctly while I’m in my new home and I can’t drive fours hours everyday just to care for them.

Please don’t say anything about all this over three fish. I’ve had them for two years, I love them, they are my pride and joy.

I have about two weeks before all the paperwork is settled and the house will be ready for me to live in… do you think any pet-stores would be willing to house my fish(for a fee) while I set up the new tank
I don’t want a debate on the ethics of keeping wild animals… I’m firmly in the corner of responsible people keeping wild animals, so answer the question, don’t lecture.
Oh, I meant a dealer, not some chain like PetSmart. My dealer moved shop across the state so he is out…

Let them roam free if you really care about them!

    Release them into the wild.

try putting them on a big plastic tub full of water with a lid. then put if some holes in the ti they should be good. or buy some fish bags like the ones at the store and put them on there.

First, don’t trust pet shop for keeping your fish…
they don’t really care but if you pay em’ a whole lot I’m sure they will…. it depends on which pet shop it is….
I have a friend in a little pet shop and they take care of my fish and they lived until I came back

Yes for a price a pet store might be willing to care for your fish. Call around. Moving the fish isn’t really all that hard. Put each fish in a plastic bag full of aquarium water and put the bags in a cooler. Empty the aquarium, move everything, set up the aquarium and re-introduce your fish.

The best place for these fish is really in the tank they are used to. If you can’t trust your mom to take care of the fish, what about a friend? I’m doubtful any chain petstore would be willing to house your fish, and unless you became really good friends with a local aquarium hobbiest, I think the fish would be staying at home.

When I moved, I set up a much smaller 35 gallon tank, and cycled the new water. Once I was ready to move the fish, I dumped out about half of the 35 gallon tank’s water, and took as much of the original 75 tanks water as I could fit into 5 gallon buckets. Then I mixed the two together. My fish were in buckets, so I then started adding the mixture of 35g and 75g water to the bucket until they had aclimated. The total process took just over a week to cycle the smaller tank, and only a few hours to move the water and fish around. Then I was free to move the 75 gallon tank and re-cycle the water for that one.
Moving with fish is difficult. Best of luck for you!

what a tough thing to do…
the best thing would be if there was a friend of yours that could keep them until you can take them to your new tank. i wouldn’t trust any members of my family to take care of my fish either and of course i wouldn’t trust a petstore-they don’t care for anything except to make money, they give bad advice and they have no clue what the heck they are talking about most of the time.

what i would tell you to do is to get the new tank and overfeed it with biospira or the new safe start and just take them with you. put them in a big plastic bag/container with lots of water and take some extra water to make water changes during the trip. i know this sounds like a lot of money but that would be the only way. another thing to do is to take all your fish and filter media with you, assuming you already have your tank at the new house, and as soon as you get there just set up everything and put the fish in their new home.
taking the filter media from the established tank will cycle the other tank immediately or within a week the latest because most of the beneficial bacteria is found in the filter media.

hope i helped. and if i didnt’ then i hope you find a way so that your fish make the trip.

    good luck!

Hello… this is probably a tough time for you!!! Do NOT take them with you!! I am sorry, but fish are not capabile of riding in cars. You need to trust your mom!! Write a list of things that you do everyday to care for them. Then, hang that list above your tank and tell your mom to do that everyday….

Have fun living by yourself!! ^_^
