I set up a 65 gallon octagon tank 3 weeks ago. I had a friend who was getting rid of his 55 gallon?
saltwater setup to switch to freshwater so i grabbed 6 five gallon buckets and filled them up with his water and also got his live sand, which he had established for over a year, mixed it with 30 or so gallons of filtered tap, figured it would give me a jump start.. He also gave me 2 anemones and 3 fish. it is currently set up with an old school halogen light built in the hood with a regular bulb. I have a protein skimmer, heat(74F), and power heads. Its has a whisper 60 with an extended tube to reach down the tall tank for filtration which has done the job thus far. Now i wanted to set up the tank with live rock and coral and had some questions…Can a special bulb be bought for the halogen light to make enough light for coral, or does a special lamp need to be bought? How long should the light be on in the tank?off day and on night? Is the charcoal filter bad for the tank? How much live rock is generally needed to build a center piece in an aquarium like this? Any help would be great. Thanks Sam

tank setup looks good (however the anemones and probably the fish require a salt environment)
go to fishlore.com (beginners guide) to get better answers
i also recommend liveaquaria.com for care of tank mates
rule of thumb is 1lb of live rock per gallon of water but can be reduced with the use of a filter
charcoal is necessary in a filter to remove unwanted chemicals like ammonia
as for the light coral and some anemones do need special lighting but don’t know if you can buy bulbs for your setup (without knowing more) try your local mom and pop fish store for this answer
