I have a 10 gallon tank. 1 male betta+ what?

I just bought a 10 gallon tank with a filter and a heater and one live plant so far. I have one male Betta that I will definitely be putting in there. I bought a hidey place too. What else can/should I add to my tank? I know the 1inch of fish per gallon rule. I was thinking some cory cats and/or african dwarf frogs (NOT the clawed ones). How many of each would be acceptable? Should I only get one or the other? What other fish can I consider keeping in here?

Thanks :)

The cats will be fine. I always found frogs to be hard. Keep it to fish that are roughly the size of the beta of smaller, and 8 fish or less.

I kept a beta in my 55 gallon tank and he didn’t bother the others, and the others never bothered him.

god you have LOTS of options!
hmmm frogs for sure, maybe even one of those lil crabs.
(yes you can I have one that likes in a tank with a frog and a betta just fine!) a small snail, hmmm maybe a female betta, you have the room.
hmmm zebra danios, and neon tetras, and any of those tiny fish.
Any plans for more plants? that would be cool.
    so much fun!

first, forget the 1″ per gallon. does not take into consideration important matters such as waste production, aggression, activity level…

how many of each depends on if you want anything besides them or not. if you want to add a small school of fish (like tetras) as well I’d suggest 3-4cories and 1 frog. if you want only those then 5 cories and 2-3 frogs.

oh yes… if you want other fish check out these a school of 4-5
tetras (MANY types, neons, black skirts, glowlight)
    danios (leopards, zebras, glofish)
    rasboras

If you add another male betta, they’ll fight until only the winner is still living. If you add a female, they’ll fight until they’re both without fins and possibly breed (I’ve bred them, they both wind up pretty well fin-less and requiring major medication). Add snails and fish that don’t have long, flashy fins. If you add anything that resembles a betta at all, it will probably be bitten to death.

Cory cats are a great idea with your betta :) A school of 4-5 is recommended, as they are schooling fish. Do not get any long-finned fish, as your betta will see these as competition. Also try to avoid faster-moving, agressive fish, because it will be difficult for your betta to get his share of the food.
Neon tetras, or the black neon tetras, are a good choice, as they are calmer fish.

If you’d like to have more fish in your community tank, I’d set up a system with lots of plants & hiding places, and add 4 albino cory cats, 5 black neon tetras, and 3-5 female bettas of varying colors (red, blue, cambodian etc). If you have a decent filter, this combination will not overload your tank, and is wonderful to watch as the tetras school, and the bettas watch you and ‘play.’
Female bettas that aren’t used to community tanks will get along with lots of hiding places, and if you ever breed bettas, females raised in communities absolutely LOVE each other. A friend of mine had a tank of 20 assorted females that would come to the top of the tank to be pet :)
