I don’t know how to save my dying goldfish!?

I’m not sure how old this goldfish is. It’s pretty old though. We used to keep it in the pond and it was the only one that survived the cat next door and has grown to now about 7 inches and pretty fat.
I know it might be dying of old age.
It’s now in a fish tank with some other fish and a turtle. I doubt its because of the new environment because its been living in there and doing fine for a couple months now.
I don’t know much about the ammonia levels and whatnot because its usually my dad who takes care of the fish tanks. But it is so sad watching a fish die.
Right now, its floating on its side but I can tell its still alive because it still moves and when I tried to pick it up, it swam all the way to the bottom….if there’s anything I can do.
Please tell me.
It’s too late now…I appreciate all the answers.
I feel guilty because I feel like I’ve done something wrong to cause its death. Like it would’ve survived if my dad was here.
I don’t know if I’ve done anything wrong. I just hate watching something die and not being able to do anything about it.

If it was me, i would take a tiny water sample to a nearby pet store. There they can check the water for pH levels etc. If there is something wrong with the water they can give you some medicine. Also, describe the fish’s condition and how it is acting. If it is a disease they know about they might be able to treat it! Good luck, I wish you and your fish the best.

I would perhaps do a small water change (with dechlorinated water at the same temp. as the tank). Make it about 10% of the tank volume

Nothing you can do when its their time its their time, 7 years is a long time and it probably feels like losing a cat or dog but theres not much you can do when its life has run its course.

A fish that is floating on its side at the top of the tank usually does not have a lot of time left before it dies. You are going to have to check your water quality to be able to tell if it is sick and add additional details on how it looks. So the only advice I can give you is to do a 25% water change and check your water quality. If everything is fine with the water and there is no signs of disease then he might be getting dieing from old age.

well, for the future, you can take a sample of your water to a pet store and they can test it for you. OR you can buy a kit and do it yourself at home.

If it died of old age, there was nothing you could have done. It’s not your fault. Sorry for your loss :(

take a sample of the water to the pet store to so they can testy it so no other fish die. maybe you should have taken it 2 a vet. or even a pet store can tell what waz wrong with it. as for old age no professional could have saved it. it waz its time and no one can change the cycle of life. sry 4 it’s loss.

Just have good memories of your goldfish. Now, there is another young goldfish out there who needs a home. Give the goldfish a good buriel, pray, then go get another little goldfish who needs love and a new home. That is how life works. Keep opening another door.

Fish can be affected by being moved to a smaller environment. At only 7 inches, I doubt your fish is dying of old age. Regular pond goldfish live at least 20 years, and get much bigger than that. How large is this tank? Goldfish and turtles give off a lot of waste, so it could be poisoned, especailly if it is not a very large tank.
Oh, I am sorry for your loss. Sounds like you did what you could.

omigod. My goldfish is huge and we love him. We have had him for 10 years. We have just changed his water, as we always do, and he is in shock and lying on his side at the bottom. Was it too warm or too cold? Weird as we have always changed his water with no problem. The water here in Gloucestershire tastes of chlorine, maybe that is the problem. He has been lying on his side for 3 days. (I am a nurse). He looks swollen on right side of abdomen and is clearly on the way out, so in desperation I have put some ibuprofen in the tank (he is about to die anyway…) which I crushed up, and also I have put a wooden spoon in to put him upright, which I have lodged into the stones. He seems to he happier upright, and his gills are beginning to move again like he is trying to respire. I don’t know the date of your message, but is your fish still alive??? x x Since my message 10 minutes ago I have added some salt as suggested on this site, and i am not kidding, my fish is starting to try and swim and move his fins!!! I know he is still not well, but this is unbelievable…. maybe the salt is the answer….
