How many neon tetras can i add to my 29 gallons tank?

I do not have any existing fish yet. Currently there are few plants (but not heavily planted) and 1″ gravel. what will be the recommended amount and the max amount? In one website this is what it mentions…

[Your tank's capacity is: 110.61 Liters ( 29.22 US Gallons) ]
[You could keep 64 fish (each of 1 inches) in such aquarium]

So what do u guys think ?

1 one inch fish per gallon…..bigger fish need more. neons stay small so maybe 20?

ignore that 1″ per gallon rule, it’s a load of bull. i wish it would die out. it doesn’t take into account very important things like shoaling needs/territory needs/where the fish occupy in the water column/adult size, anything really.

anyway, is this tank cycled? neons are quite fragile these days and can’t survive in an uncycled or very newly cycled tank.

if it has been fully cycled i suggest adding 5 neons now, another 4-5 in a week or two, and thats max number of neons. adjust the numbers depending on what else you’re planning to keep.

With only a few plants, I would start with 2-4 fish per week untill I reached a maximum of 20 fish. Remember, you will probably want to add a few Ottos or other small bottom dwellers like Corydoras eventually and you want to have plenty of room. The old rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon. I tend not to follow this rule as I like to keep my aquariums a little understocked. It is far better to have a whole lot of room to breath than it is to be crowded. If you err on the side of conservative stocking you will have a much more stable environment for your fish which means longer lived fish and more disiease free fish.

I would put a school of neon, like 6 individuals, and also add some other small fish. with diverse species of fish in your aquarium, your tank will look much better tthen if you have a lot of neon fish.

I always laugh when questions like this are asked it shows how many have no idea how to use the 1inch rule it is not how long the fish is it is how many times or how many will fit in a 1×1 cube and with neons that is a lot

so yes you could have 64 neons in a 29 gallon tank but a school that size looks better in a longer tank
so i think I would cut the number in half and then add a few different types of fish that will enhance the arrearence of the school swiming past them

I do not know if I would go with 64 neon’s but you definitly can have quite a few of them in there. They are schooling fish and look better with a bunch. You could definitly add more then 2-4 a week. Maybe 10 would be a good number to start with and then add 10 more depending if you want all neon’s in the tank. I think that would look pretty good. Just make sure you do have the proper filtration. I agree with the person above me also.

You most definatly could not keep 64 1″ fish in a 29 gal aquarium. Assuming you are only going to keep neons then a school of 20 would do well in a 29gal. If you are going to keep other fish that number goes down.

    Hey,
I would have to agree with some of the others above.
Ignore the 1″ rule. It is completely fake!!
    Now, on with the question…
For starters buy 5 neon tetra’s. Next week buy 3 to 5 more.
To sum it all up, I would say about 15 would be the max for comfort. Also, if you want to get more fish, 15 neons would still be comfortable with them.
