How many male Firemouth Cichlids can i keep in a 45 gallon aquarium?

I have one male and I’m a big fan of firemouths so id like to add more if possible, but no females, as i dont want breeding. if I were to add anything else with the firemouths it would probably be a small shoal or black skirt tetras, or tiger barbs.

If you bought them together you might have been able to get two
But since the one you have has now established his territory it’s just the one
You could do a school of like ten or twelve of either the tetras or barbs
Firemouths used to be my favorite also. They are very impressive. I had mine in a 30 gallon show tank. I had anywhere from 4 to 8 medium sized ones with other fish able to get along with them. Tiger barbs, a few sharks, and a Pleco. 8 firemouths was a bit too much. Not so much from overcrowding. They fought to much. I also had a 40 gallon tank with only gold convict cichlids. About 12. They started breeding. At 20 I had to thin the herd out. I was able to give some away.
I had a convict Cichlid and an Oscar in a 20 gallon tank, temporarily, of course. After a week the convict had dominated the entire tank and I moved the Oscar into a new 25 gallon, also temporary, tank. Upon removing the oscar from the convict’s tank, convict has lost all color and hasn’t regained it for 2 months. Oscar is doing fine in his 25 gallon long tank. Could I get away with placing the convict back with the oscar in the bigger tank or will the oscar just be terrorized again? Suggestions? …. I plan to get a 55 gallon for the oscar once he gets bigger. Perhaps 2 male convict cichlids could get along in a 25 gallon? I want him to have a friend so he’ll show his stripes.
Thanks!
@Jume , have placed 2 breeding pairs of convicts in a 25 gallon tank. They have nested in two clay pots at the extreme ends. the males are fiercely territorial, and i can almost feel an invisible divide in the tank. they have nested twice and the shoal of fry that resemble a ball are fun to watch.
