How many koi can I keep in a 75 gallon? What other fish can I get?

How many koi can I keep in a 75 gallon? If they get too big my grandparents have a koi pond I can put them in. I want them to be around 5 inches when I get them.

I don’t know what I want to put in my 75. Maybe koi, but I also was thinking discus. How many can I put in my tank? What fish can live with them? What are some other fish ideas for my tank?

If you are confused I’m not keeping koi with discus.
Thanks everyone for the koi info, but what about discus?

    the general rule of thumb for fish is 1 inch of fish per 10 gallons of water so a 75 gallon tank can have one fish that is 7.5 inches long. Your best bet for a more visually appealing tank is to go with several small fish such as tetra, rasboas, etc (that are peaceful) instead of choosing on very large fish. You must consider how large the fish will get when it is grown, not how big it is now.

    Good luck.

    Come on you guys…the rule is one gallon of water for every inch of mature fish. A koi isn’t great for a tank because they get so big, that’s why they’re kept in ponds. A koi can easily reach over 2 feet, requiring 2 gallons to survive himself! 10 koi would require over 200 gallons!

    Fancy goldfish, regular goldfish and koi all do quite well together and need much the same environment to thrive. Fancy goldfish usually max out at 10-12 inches, each needing 10-12 gallons each to live.

    It doesn’t matter how big they are when you get them…you do the math on how big they are supposed to be at maturity. You can not stunt a fish by more than 20% or he will get sick and die. Remember, it is much more difficult to catch and transport a fish the larger they grow, so it’s good your grandparents have a pond for them, but how are you going to get them there? I wouldn’t get more than 2 if the tanks only 75 gallons and you want to put something else with them.

    Micki is correct, it is one gallon per 1 inch of fish. :}

    And, yes. Koi can grow quite big, so you probably don’t want to risk putting a lot of them in the tank. A couple, maybe. You should try complementing them with other fish. :}

    NO KOI in a tank. They are pond animals. Koi grow to 3′ long and can live up to 100 years old.

    I would keep 3-4 discus in that tank.
