In a 10 gallon tank, I say that atleast 15 platies.

So maybe for 50 tank, LOL 75+ guppies or platies..LMAO

It will cost nearly $1000+ including all needed materials and decorations..

about 30-40 fish.one gallon of water per inch of fish.altho this rule doese have flaws.only use this rule with fish that are not round.dont add them all at once.about 3 fish a week would work.

The rule of thumb is 1″ of fish per gallon of water. This does not mean you can put a 50″ fish in a 50 gallon tank. Rather, if you lined up all your fish end to end, you could have 50″ of fish in a 50 gallon tank, no more. This is also their expected adult size, not necessarily the size they are when you get them.
Since Platies and Guppies tend to be between 2-3 inches when full grown, I would not keep more than 20 in a 50 gallon, 15 in a 40 gallon. Make sure you get all males, or your tank will soon be over run with fry.
Consider keeping a trio of Corydora catfish in your tank. They have to be kept in groups of 3 or more, but they are very cute and fun to watch. Gives you something going on in the bottom of your tank, and they clean up all the uneaten food on the bottom.
Cost varies from place to place, but Guppies and Platies are very common and very affordable. I wouldn’t expect to pay more than $2 each, probably, where I live.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Keep your eyes open for some used tanks on Craig’s list. You should be able to get a setup for less than $100, maybe even closer to $50. As far as stocking the tank goes, try to find a local aquarium club. You should be able to buy fish from local breeders for far less than at your pet store. I don’t keep many livebearers anymore but you should be able to house 20-30 comfortably in a tank that size. You can always remove some later if it is overstocked.

You should be NO WHERE NEAR $1,000 as someone else mentioned. Just keep an eye out and you’ll find a good deal.
