How many fish can I have in 1.5 gal aquarium?
by Aquaboy on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 | 15 Comments
I have 1.5 gal aquarium with a small goldfish and a very small snail. I know goldfish requires a big tank and grows accordingly, but I can only have a small aquarium at this poin. I was wondering if I could add one more fish so that the goldfish does not get lonely (snail is not much fun). What would you recommend or which fish?
Thanks in advance,
Buka

gold fish don’t get lonely. you don’t need another fish, but you need a bigger tank.
i went shopping for a fish not too long ago and from what petsmart told me you would need a bigger tank to put another fish in…my advise would be to go and talk to the people at the petsmart closest to you and they can give you better advise.
dontt add more fish its over crowded with the goldfish alone trust me he wont last long probly a year or less
I am a firm believer that whatever animal you have, you must have two…..for those reasons. However, I think the “rule of thumb” is 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish or something like that. you can do a search on that on the web. Good luck.
You should have one inch of fish per one gallon of tank. I would say with the goldfish and snail you are where you should be. The fish will be fine alone with the snail. Maybe get a small “toy” for the tank. Have you thought about getting a 5 gallon tank? They are not that much bigger as far as how much space they take up on a table but yet give you more room for fish. Good luck!
The size of the fish is an important factor, generally you are suposed to have one 1.5 inch fish per gallon, but I find that if you keep the tank clean you can have more. If you take care of the tank I would bet one more wouldn’t be a problem, but I wouldn’t go more than that.
I think the guideline is one inch of fish per gallon, so 1.5 inches of fish would be safe. There are other guidelines too.
Ehm, to be honest with you, in your situation… uh… none!
I know you’re not technically supposed to have more than one fish in a 1.5g tank, but I had two goldfish in one and they seemed fine. Mine were pretty small though so it does depend. They were like that for a year but I had to give them away due to living in a dorm and having to travel and leave them so much.
Right now that tank is full. By small you really meant small, huh? I mean, a one gallon is smaller than my mousepad…buy a ten gallon. They aren’t that bigger and still cheap and easy to care for.
A good rule of thumb on standard aquariums is for freshwater ever 1 gallon will allow for 1 inch of fish. So if I have a 10 gallon, I can either have one 10″ fish or five 2″ fish and so on. For saltwater it is every 4 gallons to one inch of fish.
But if your aquarium is of a different or strange design than the surface area is what counts on how much fish you can keep.
Unfortunately you cannot add any more fish to this tank. And in fact, as you know the tank is already too small for a goldfish.
I recommend that you take the goldfish back to the store and get some fish that stay smaller such as some small tetra’s, danios, or white clouds.
Please do not listen to the people that say you can have 1″ per gallon of water. This is simply not true and only works or a very small subset of fish. There is no magic rule on stocking a tank, it depends too much on the specific fish you have in your tank.
half of a fish
no, no, no and no
Get at least a 20 gallon tank for your goldfish, it won’t survive in that small tank
If you’re looking for other fish, get EITHER a couple of neon tetras, zebra danios or balloon mollies
Hope that helps
Good luck

You should consider a bigger tank and get a couple more goldfish. I have many fish and they love having other fish to swim with they are always playing together. I tell people having fish in a small tank and trying to overcrowd them is like making you live in a small closet with 2-3 other people. Would you be happy? You will be pleased at the results if you get at least a 10 gallon tank and at least one more goldfish.
I actually wouldnt even put one fish in that small of a tank
