The rule of thumb for fish in a tank is 1inch of fish per gallon. That mean adult sizes. Personally what i would do is go out and pic up about 4 neon tetras and a snail to help keep the tank clean. The neon tetras are very brightly coloured, simple to take care of and swim around alot. Them or something simaler but in that size of tank no more then 4 fish.
a few tetras, guppies, or miniature balloon mollies would be good.
not all together of course.
that tank size is tiny.
so 2-3 of one type of fish.
edit* wow. people, they’re just fish. sure i love them, but cheese and rice.
one male betta and a shrimp, one live plant, too. “miniature” balloon mollies won’t stay miniature, they will grow to their max size of 2 inches. balloon mollies need 20g+ tanks. guppies need 10g+, so do tetras. a school of 6 tetras wouldn’t have much space in a 6g. the one-inch-per gallon rule wouldn’t work, that would be crowding the fish. that rule is old and doesn’t really work anyway.
neons won’t school in a group of 4, they, along with all other tetras, need 6+ groups.
really the best thing to do with a 6 gallon tank is the have plants and one male betta but rember water temp needs to be around 76 deg for tropical fish
if you use the 1 inch per gallon rule and wanted to go with neons you could have in the neighbor hood of 12 to 18 since even though they get about an inch long one does not equal an inch of fish. but again the temp needs to be 76.
and I would still only recommend one male betta
Any fish you’d like that’s smaller than six inches
1 male betta, or 3 male guppies..thts it…tetras tend to get stressed if kept in school of less than 5…also have some plants in there…
I don’t know why all these people are telling you live plants. If you’re new to fish keeping, use just plastic plants. The plants are only slightly less confusing to deal with at first in comparison the fish, and you don’t want to be dealing with both confusions at the same time. As for the fish: one inch of fish per gallon. Its really really tempting to go crazy and get way too many fish, but then the tank will be filthy. So do your best to restrain yourself and limit yourself to some small fish. 4 or 5 guppies, or tetras. 3 or 4 platys or mollys or other midsize fish. Or maybe two Gouramis?
