You should not. I have never heard of doing that. Clorine is one of the undesirable chemicals that will kill fish. De-Chlor is one of the products we use to get RID of chlorine so the fish can live.
Don’t use Clorox…you run the danger of having a porous fish tank that in turn can trap some of the molecules and kill your fish. There are safe cleaning solutions in pet stores and buy a magnet so you can safely remove the grime.
Don’t use bleach! You could kill your fish. See if the pet store has a mild but effective soap to use.
Of course you can use bleach. It’s the only thing that will kill fish viruses and bacteria. You can make a bleach solution of one part bleach to 5 parts water. rinse the tank with it, the net, and plants, etc. But when using bleach, make sure you rinse with fresh water like a mad person! rinsing up to 10 times is probably good, and until you can’t smell any bleach any more. Also, when you fill your tank back up, use a de-chlorination treatment, easily purchased any any pet store. You may not need to use the bleach treatment every single time you clean the tank, but maybe everyother time or if a fish gets sick.
grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!
Never use bleach. No matter how hard you rinse, it can leave a nasty residue. If you are cleaning a tank, you should know that you never ever do a 100% water change, so cleaning a tank requires lots of scrubbing. Unless you have a sickness in your tank or you have left it too long, 30% is the maximum amount of water I would remove. Remember that fish need the “good” bacteria too and too clean of water will kill them.
Go to your nearest pet store and you can get special algae removing scrubbers, and if you don’t have a vacuum for the gravel you can get that too. For the outside of the tank, I use some vinegar sprayed onto a paper towel. Good luck.
jeez, you’re not even supposed to use regular soap.
You shouldn’t
it is a mortal sin to use clorox in cleaning your tank.
it is as if your commiting suicide.
there are alot of cleaning solutions available in pet stores. you can use it.
You can use bleach to clean a tank before setting it up. Just use a 1 part bleach 20 part water solution. Then rinse with water until you don’t smell anymore bleach. Then rinse with 2X dosed dechlorinated water several times. Then fill with 2X dosed dechlorinated water.
Personally I would not use bleach to clean a tank. You just might miss some somehow… I just use a rag a water hose and some elbow grease.
Do not do that! When cleaning your tank you do not do the whole tank. You only do partial water changes and that is it. Only syphon 10-20% of the water. If you have algae then get an algae pad and scrape it off. But don’t use bleach! If you clean the whole tank you take out the live bacteria in the tank and that can do more harm then good for your fish.
Yeah bleach is ok if you’re not in a hurry. Sodium hypochlorite will break down and not leave any long-lasting residue. But I agree with the others when they say dilute greatly with water and rinse until the smell has gone. God for cleaning newly aquired second-hand tanks and when you’re starting a setup all over again.
