I have rigid hornwort, java fern, and anacharis. The hornwort is reaching the top of my aquarium and i need to trim it how do i do this without killing the plant? Should i just cut the tops off or start from the roots?

With a scissors
1..you stick your hand in there and cut.
2..you go back and pick it up
3..dude its not that hard
I use just plain old scissors for mine and they never died.
just take a pair of scissors and snip. I have done this plenty of times and all of my plants are alive and well
use a pair of scissors and cut them as short as you want them. hope this helps
