How do I give this poor Oscar fish a better home?
I have loved Oscars since the sixth grade, when we had one as a class pet in science. And I have mentioned to my mother before that when I have the money I would love to buy one, but not anytime soon. Seeing as I just had to quit my job because I am about to start college, so I had no income. My mother tried to surprise me by buying me one a few months ago. I was so excited! I fell in love with him. She bought the tank and everything. But I was a little concerned about the size of it.. it was only 10 gallons. You’re supposed to start out an Oscar in at least a 70 gallon tank. When I told her this she said I could forget about it. She wasnt buying a huge, expensive tank. And I can not afford one. It makes me so mad that she would buy a fish, that gets up to 13 inches long!, and shove him in this tiny box. He was about the size of a half dollar when she got him, and now he is almost five inches long. He has barely any room to swim. I feed him twice a day, everyday. Krill and cichlid pellets. I have looked at bigger tanks and I cant find any within my price range! I love this fish so much, I know that sounds so weird, my mother tells me all the time “It’s just a fish.” But he has a personality, and I’ve gotten so attached to him. I need to find him a bigger home, this is cruelty. My dad is no help at all, he told me to put him in the local pond. Where there’s 20 pound catfish and 5 foot long gators. He wouldn’t last. Not to mention all the foreign bacteria in that water.
I havent tried to call any pet stores to see if they would like to take him. Should I do that? My mother bought him from walmart, and I really dont want to try to return him there. I know they wouldnt take him anyways.
What should I do?

Allison if you really want to find him a home, go onto facebook assuming you have an account and maybe start a group for finding the fish a home and set you status as the same, maybe some friends or people on facebook might take him in. Spend a coupld dollars and get an advertisement put in the newspaper, if your local radio station has a “swap” show, where people phone in and try to sell stuff they don’t need you could always do that as well. Try those methods and any others that you can think of and you should be golden.
its nice to actually find people how are attached to their fish like me
if you want you could look on kijiji, or craigslist for cheaper tanks. you could get a 20 gallon maybe, but you would also need to upgrade that. i know that a 20 gallon still isnt good enough but itll do fo until you can upgrade him
if you have to get rid of him, put an ad up on the 2 sites that i mentioned earlier, and ask for a good home. hope this helps, and good luck. i really hope you can keep him
You could bring him to a locally owned, reputable fish dealer in your area. Or you could look on craigslist for a 75+ gallon tank, or you could buy a suitable sized pond from a store and keep it indoors, with a heater and filter.
There is two things you can do. The Oscar will only grow as big as the tank can allow it. It will probably not get any bigger than 6 inches. So you could take everything out and put one piece of driftwood in the tank. And maybe white sand. Or you can save up your money and buy a 55 gallon tank.
