How do I get rid of black algae in my aquarium?

For about 2 weeks I have had algae problems, and its especially bad this week. I clean my tank every week, but the algae grows back right away. I had one live plant in there and I took it out a week ago because it got mushy. But the algae is black! SO yesterday I went to petco, and bought an algae sponge, a gravel filter, a new filter pad, and a Cory Catfish. I cleaned the entire thing and did like a 40% water change. The algae was all gone and I just checked on my fish and the algae is back!! Its only been a day!

HOW DO I GET RID OF IT?!?!?!

I’m going to get another cory cat to keep up with the work but what else can I do?
It’s a 10 gallon with 4 tiger barbs and 1 cory cat at the moment, but I’m gonna get 1 more tiger barb and 1 more cory cat.
I only feed them once a day.
Um i did think about an algae eater? if u actually read the description i bought a cory cat, they eat algae! And its a 10 gallon tank, chinese algae eaters get up to a foot long!

Algaefix is a good product. I don’t like dumping chemicals into my tank, but I used it as a last resort and I was very pleased with the results.

You would be overstocking your tank a bit by adding more fish after what you already have, which means more nitrogenous waste, which means more algal growth. Tiger barbs and cories are both heavy-bodied active fish, which means that they produce more waste.

You could also cut back on feeding to once a day, if you haven’t already. Less food also equals less waste. Only leave your light on for 8 hours, and adding more live plants to compete for nutrients and light will cut back on algae as well.

i only heard this never done this if it is growing on ornaments take them out and soak them in peroxide until it dies or you can inject it directly into the algae and kill it. if will not harm fish at small doses if you want to try it go here http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/ they got people who did this to solve there black algae prob and they said it worked ask them or try to look it up in there site. it is supposed to be the safest and fastest way to get rid of it for good due to black algae being the hardest to get rid of

not all algae eaters will eat this- i have tried both plecos & ottocynclus -no effect ; this algae is relly nasty & hard litterally to scrub, remove, i am fighting it for a year now though not actively all that time; investigating use of permanganate on it now…
