You can add your salt directly to the tank. An easier way is to let it dissolve in the bucket when you do a water change. That way, a fish won’t think the salt grains are food and try to eat them.
Don’t use ordinary table salt, use salt that is meant for aquariums
a good rule of thumb is 1 tablespoon for 5 gallons of water. 1 tablespoon for 10 gallons of water if you have plecos or other catfish.
Don’t add all of the salt at once, do it gradually.
Best not to add it directly – the fish may try to eat it, and as it’s added it will make the area where it’s put extra salty. Use a clean soda bottle to put the salt in, then fill with water and mix, then add this slowly to the tank.
There’s no need to remove the fish.
they can do with out the salt if you have live plants the salt will kill them
if you want to add salt just add 1 tbs of non iodine salt for every 5 gallons the ammont is so small that you need you can just add it directly to the tank at one time
also rember the only way the salt leaves the tank is when you siphon the gravel and then it is just a small amount so you will then add maybe 1 tbs per 10 gallons every 6 months after you first put it in
Don’t use ordinary table salt! You need to go to the pet store and get a container of aquarium salt. Read the back to see how to add it, or ask the pet store person.
I have a glass jar with a lid set aside for this purpose- a plastic container could work as well.
I typically get API aquarium salt for my freshwater tanks. No, you don’t need to remove your fish.
- I use the jar to remove a cup or two of water from the tank
- take a dedicated measuring tablespoon to scoop the required amount of salt into the jar (differs by tank size- check the directions on the package)
- put the lid on, shake it up a bit to dissolve the salt
- slowly (1/4-1/2 cup every 10 min or so) add the salted water to the aquarium so not to shock the fish
~Hope this helps!
