How can you tell if your star fish is dead.?

I have a salt water tank with a bright reddish-orange star fish in it. Last night I found it lying on its back. Usually when it does this, it tries to get up its self and is usually successful. But this time, he was just flat on the sand bed. I thought he may have been dead so I turned him over. When I did so, after a few minutes, it looked like he moved a little since he was facing differently from when I turned him over. How do you know if a star fish is dead? Do they change color or anything?

hmm good question…but if you cut off one of its legs will a new one grow from the leg, thats what I wanna know!
Well for marine species, laying on your back is not usually a good sign. I mean when a dog plays dead he lays on his back, if someone in front of you shoots you in the head you will be laying back…but also I dont even sleep on my back so hmm…
hope that its just asleep. Maybe it has a special kind of algae in the tank? some algae makes starfish slower believe it or not.
take a video of it in 15 minutes duration and then watch it in fast motion to see if you can detect any movement.
Flip it over and see what happens…………
