The only filter you can really DIY is the sponge filter, sponge filters are fairly weak and only really suitable for fry tanks and hospital tanks, see the guides here:

well you could always get an algae eater, they keep the water quite good, but they die if the tank is too clean for too long

You could also make a wet dry filter. I don’t have any links, but just do a quick search, lots of fish forums have ways to make your own. I dont know the exact specs and materials, but basically a 10 gallon tank or rubbermaid bin, some tubing, bio balls, few other things all that’s really needed.
