I have four koi fish that i bought from Wal-Mart about two weeks ago, and I was told that koi fish will grow no matter of the size of the aquarium.

20 gallons OMG they are pond fish let alone 4 its ot your fault but walmart are not the best shop, they once told me that male bettas are bets kept in pairs, then again so did petco
The fish produce ammonium which is toxic to them, their body will stop growing once there’s too much ammonium in the water but their internal organs will continue to grow causing a long and painful death. Koi should never be kept in any aquarium unless it’s exeptionally huge, we’re talking 300 gallons. The best place for Koi is in a pond.
As far as im aware, kois get to 4ft, some bigger and they should really only be kept in outdoor ponds
If proper water changes are done( which can be 8-10 times a day for larger koi, with each water change at 60-75%), you could probably get the koi to grow at least as long as the tank, but why would you keep a fish that grows huge in such a small tank.. Because of there max size(2-4 feet), they would need a huge tank of several hundred gallons, with a large pond being preferred. A 20 gallon tank will not do at all. I would get rid of them a get either a tropical fish tank setup or a cool water fish tank[ goldfish( no more than one in this tank because of there max size), danios, white cloud minnows, fat head minnows].
Hope this helps!!!
