help!, need to know what this fish is!!!?

My friend has a fish that she had for like 4 years and still does’nt know what kind it is. It is a maroon color, its kindof disc shaped with a bit of flowing fins, it has teeth she said. She named it Dino.
It is freshwater she said, in about a 15 gallon tank, its about 3-4 inches long last time i looked. She doesn’t have a heater for it, the aquarium lights heat the water. She got it at petsmart, it has a filter in the tank also. She said the water is dirty, the filter takes care of everything, the fish has been in that water for awhile and its healthy. :P
Also, she said she bought 30 fish along with it, and when she went to check on them in the morning there were 30 dead fish skeletons on the bottom, and the maroon fish was left. :I
I could try and get some pics later on. Can you tell me what fish this is?

I would imagine that the 30 fish were dumped in a new tank and died through new tank syndrome, the fact that one survived meant it had a high tolerance for nitrate which the fish tank would have been high in within the first week, The only fish that vaguely springs to mind is the emperor tetra, it having long flowing fins but the colour id not describe as maroon size is about right and the fact that most tetras have teeth even if they’re to small to see.
It requires a water change however, in the first week i’d do a 10pct change and then slowly increase each week by 5 pct until your doing 25pct water changes then drop it to every 2 weeks at 25pct, of course you will need to use a dechlorinate
