Good Fish For A Community Fish Tank?
by Aquaboy on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 | 5 Comments
my tank is 45 gallons. it measures 4 feet long, 16 inches tall, and 14 inches deep. It will be a freshwater aquarium. I can’t decide which fish to get. Now I am thinking maybe creating some time of community fish tank so that I can have different types of fish. I was hoping to keep small fish 1-2 inches and medium sized fish 4-6 inches. What kind of fish should I get? What kind of fish can live together in a community fish tank? Is there any was I can create a community tank with a Blood Red Parrot in it?
thanks.

This ^ site mentions that tank mates should be faster than the parrots (I guess so the parrots can’t pick on them?)http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/cichli…
This site ^ mentions, “Owners have kept them successfully in community tanks with a variety of peaceful fish. Mid sized tetras, danios, angelfish, and catfish are all good possible tank mates.”
From these, I would think you might be ok with (for the 2-6 inch fish) dwarf gouramis or possibly some of the slightly bigger species (some can be aggressive, but depends on individual fish, my three spot gourami – sometimes called blue gourami – is very peaceful) blue gourami, honey gourami, three spot gourami, I think there are also ones called gold and flame gouramis as well.
Platys might be ok.
I don’t know about mollies, most everyone says they’re peaceful, but not the ones I’ve had (also, do not mix mollies with gouramis! They will peck on them and eat their slime coat.)
Khulis are always cool. (They do hide a lot though.)
There are so many types of fish to choose from!
Have fun and good luck!
i have seen community tanks with goldfish and a blood parrot in it, but i was always taught chiclids eat gold fish and other fish… but i have seen it so maybe there is a way to go about it. since this is a starter tank i would reccomend getting a few mollys they come in all sorts of varities and colors are nonaggressive community fish (well mostly i did have one that was a butthole once) and very hardy. and the ballon mollys are super cute.
large school of maybe 20 neon tetras will add vibrant colors to that tank. Build around the school of community of fish. They are peaceful and are compatible with anything .
Clown fish are saltwater fish. Duh.
