Goldfish Is Dying, Other Goldfish Already Showing Signs Of Mourning. Should I Get A New Fish….?
I have two goldfish and they had been pretty healthy up until this point. It seemed like all at once they started getting sick. My little one got swim bladder, fixed that, a day later she had fin rot which progressed so much over night that she no longer has a tail. She is now completely healthy even though she now swims a little funny but two days ago I noticed her best friend was laying on the bottom and the lower half of his body was slightly lighter than the top half. The next day I woke up and he had no scales on his lower body so I went to the pet store got some medication and started treating him yesterday. After I gave him the medication a few hours later he swam to the top of the water from laying on the bottom, I thought this was a good sign until this morning he is laying sideways leaning against the glass and will not swim away even if I tap on the glass. The only way I can even tell if hes still alive is if I knock on the table and he twitches a little. My little fish (the one that recovered from swim bladder and fin rot) is swimming around him and when he doesn’t move she goes to the bottom of the tank and swims in circles around the whole tank. I have a feeling she’s sad about her buddy getting sick ):. Anyway, I was wondering if I should get a new fish to replace him once I cycle the tank for about a week to make sure everything is okay with my other fish. I don’t want to get another goldfish because I don’t want to feel like I’m replacing my other little guy (I’m really heart broken that I basically have to watch him die.) I was thinking a rosy red minnow or two even though they are feeder fish I feel like my little fish has gotten used to having a friend and she needs someone to play with (She’s very playful for a goldfish). Is there a better option for her new friend that would be relatively small and okay with cold water, or is a rosy red minnow a good choice?

I understand that you want to do the right thing for the fish, but the major issue you have is that you don’t have a handle on some fish keeping basics.
When you have problems with fish dying, adding more fish creates a death spiral (
You need to read up on cycling tanks and what kind of habitat is appropriate for goldfish:
It takes considerably longer than a week to cycle a tank.
EDIT: yes, yahoo answers is indeed a bad place to ask for help. 99 out of 100 questions are by people who don’t have a clue about keeping fish. If you want to have an intelligent conversation, you need to go to an aquarium forum:
I highly urge you to not replace any fish.
I get the impression that you either have too small a tank for goldfish, the tank isn’t cycled or you are not maintaining it properly. Everything you described screams out poor water quality, and the more fish you have the harder it is to improve that water and keep it.
