Going to Sydney for 8 days, how’s this looking?

Ok me and my girlfriend coming in early August, both fit, late 20′s, staying roughly in the Darling Harbour area, here’s what we got so far… price EXCLUDES lodging, food, and drinks.

Day 1

Begins early 8am ish, head to Darling Harbour, check out the Royal Botanical Gardens, Art Gallery of New South Wales, shops, restaurant the opera house, walk over the harbour bridge (not doing the climb, on a tight budget. Once over the bridge, i draw a blank? I know I’ve been in some cities when you cross the bridge their ain’t too much, so any suggestions at this point? Night 1 the Aquarium.

Cost: $62.00 ASD (aquarium)

Day 2

The blue mountains, want to see Katoomba falls, this fall aboutaustralia.com/a2it_package/… the caves, and whatever wildlife we can spot. Ok, question 1, walk way, cable way, sky ride? Can we get by with just a rental car and good hiking shoes? Speaking of rental cars, looks like cost of the train is over $40ASD each, so logic tells me we should just rent a car? We’d like to get there at sunrise, leave at sunset (can we do that stuff in that time?). Back to Sydney, night 2, bars!

Cost $80-??? ASD (car or train+bus)

Day 3

Assuming we rented the car… UIuru, Hunter Valley for the wine stuff, or Jervis Bay, whale watch or just enjoy an isolated beach. Probable overnight stay here.

COST: Rental Car.

Day 4

Return the car. Take the ferry to Manly beach, do the Manly to spit bridge walk. I know it’s August, but i’m thinking of doing it polar bear style and jumping in some of the rock pools along the way if applicable. Okay we’re at the spit bridge, now what? Night 3, dinner or drinks around the rocks.

Cost: $14.00 ASD Manly Ferry

Day 5

Back to the beach, from central station take the 374 bus to Coogee Beach (no transfers right?) head to Coogee, walk to Bondi Beach. Put on my polar bear costume, rent surf board and wet suit, brave the water for whatever I can tolerate. Anything else while here? Take bus back to darling harbour. Night 5 Kings Cross.

Bus best bet here for transport?

Cost: $8 transport, $25 wet suit and board rental

Day 6

Suggestions welcome? Night 6, looking for some romantic suggestions, nice evening walk, good restaurant? etc.

Day 7

OPEN in case new stuff pops up.

Day 8

Enjoy Darling Harbour till about 1pm before Returning to United States.

Cost: Don’t know.

Additional ?’s

August what time is sunset?

Is the 7 day pass worth it based on my itinerary, or do you think it’s better to pay as we go?

What’s the best option for currency exchange (got screwed not doing my homework for this in Tokyo)?

Sydney is a bit of a nightmare to drive around remember if you are from the States we drive on the left here. You are only here for 8 days and public transport is good . Don’t think you can drive to uluru it will take you 4 days of solid driving just to get there. You will find plenty of leaflets when you are here of all sorts of things you can do. Take the commuter river cat to parramatta that’s a good trip. Walk on a glass bottom floor above the city at Sydney tower. take a wander around China town . Visit the markets or designer stores in Paddington or factory outlets at Homebush. You can easily spend a few days wandering around Darling harbour going to museums and places. Kings Cross is very seedy nightclub area

That’s looking pretty good.. Best place for the currency exchange i’m not to sure but maybe the airport. I’m from Australia and have a query for day 3 I hardly think your going to be driving from Sydney to Uluru it takes over a day to drive there… Umm I would probably buy the 7 day pass

Your central Sydney itinerary looks fine – look around The Rocks in central Sydney. It is also a good place to stay as you are just a hop step and a jump to many bars and eating places, Circular Quay, the main central city, Botanical Gardens, Opera House – you can walk to Darling Harbour( about 20-30 minutes.) Darling Harbour is more about restaurants and the Maritime Museum, Aquarium, just a nice place to wander. So shouldn’t cost much if anything.

You can take ferries that stop off at many nice suburbs etc from Circular Quay. It is a very active harbour. The North Shore is nice. Try and go up to Palm Beach area.

When you go to Manly you want to walk across the town to Manly Beach and it is a nice walk round to Shelly Beach ( short but worth it) – past the lifesaving club to the right ( facing out to sea)

I agree that driving in Sydney is not for the faint hearted! You would be best personally to take a train or tour to the Blue Mountains – especially with limited time.Would you would want to drive back from Katoomba in the dark in a strange city?

Hunter Valley – is best as an overnight trip so you have time to visit some wineries. Australia has strict drink drive rules! It is nice to go inland there and back via the coast or vice versa. If you only want to go for the day I suggest a tour is best assuming you want to do some wine tasting.

Uluru – This is a major trip 1261 miles or 2030 kilometres!

I suggest you leave Day 7 open so you can do the stuff you find you didn’t have time to or that crops up when you are actually there.

The day trip to Manly is great on the ferry, gives you a fabulous harbour view. When you get to Manly, if seafood is your thing, you should try Garfish restaurant for lunch (great view overlooking Manly Bay & the ferry wharf).

Oh, and we also have Garfish at Kirribilli on the other side of the harbour bridge walk, so if you don’t make it to Manly, and are looking for a great lunch spot after your walk across the harbour bridge, come and visit us (walk down the stairs at the end of the walk, and we are about 100 meters away)!

    Enjoy your trip to Australia!
