Ok, first off, you’ll probably want to buy a dechlorinator (I use Stress Coat) from the fish store. This is your basic water–making-safe-for-fish chemical. You can also buy “Stress Zyme” as it helps create and maintain good bacteria. My favorite choice of fish for a 10 gallon would be bettas as it is the perfect amount of room and they are quite hardy compared to alot of fish. For a bottom feeder, I would suggest getting 2-3 ghost shrimp. They will clean up any food that drops to the bottom. You might want to consider buying frozen brine shrimp. Maybe once or twice a week cut off a section from the frozen cube and drop it in for your betta and ghost shrimp. Also one last thing, you might want to consider going with sand as it’s better for shrimp and easier for you to see where the nasty stuff is when your siphoning your tank. Hope I helped!
Before you do anything else, go to your library or a book store and get a bunch of beginner’s books about aquarium keeping. Not only do you need to know what equipment to get and how to set it up, you need to learn about cycling the tank, testing the water, tank maintenance, and proper stocking. Fish keeping is much more than “just add water,” and much more than can be fully explained in this small space.
