Could i breed tropical fish in a rubbermaid Container?

I would like to start breeding fish. But due to the high cost of aquarium i was wondering if i could breed tropical fish in a 50 gallon rubbermaid container. I want to breed the fish then see them to a LPS.

Any other idea’s would be great.
What type of fish should i breed??

If it’s a 50 gallon container made to hold water and liquids, so you know that none of the chemicals will leak, that’s fine. Just make sure to clean it out like you would any other tank. I would be concerned about the heater melting the plastic, though.

What type of fish? I know betta breeders that use rubbermiad containers for spawning and grow-outs. As long as you clean it good with a non-toxic cleaner (like saltwater) and can heat it and stuff, I don’t see why not.
As for what fish…what fish do you like? And what will you do with the fry afterwards?

cant see why not if ya have a big enough fiterin it and keep it heat well too.there should be no problem at all.good luck.cheap tanks on ebay too for breeding too.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/fish-tanks-and-stands_W0QQitemZ150330020453QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Fish?hash=item150330020453&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

I don’t see why not, as long as you clean it well. Make sure to get a ridged one, I use a large green one that’s a little flimsy for water changes, and I wouldn’t want to keep mine full for very long. You can get a simple filter and a heater and you should be fine. As for what to breed, I’d check you local stores and see what they’re interested in. You don’t want to be competing with several other local breeders! Try and figure out what they’re interested in or what they have trouble getting regularly. Live bearers are easy to breed but are readily available. Betta, well they depend, some stores have multiple breeders. Cichlids could be a great idea, but you have to make sure they have the right amount of space and water quality.
    Best of Luck!

Hmmm One of the last lines confuses me “I want to breed the fish then see them to a LPS.” I will assume you mean “sell” them and that LPS stands for “local pet shop”. Forgive me if I am wrong on this.

Yes I believe that you could indeed breed them in a Rubbermaid container. However I am not too sure why you want to. Are you looking to make some money on this? I do not think you will make much money, there is a lot of time and effort with breeding fish. Baby fish need very good water conditions to survive and also need to be kept separate from the larger fish other they may be eaten.

If your looking to breed something to earn money may I suggest feeder insects such as lobster roaches or maybe feeder mice? Talk to the local pet stores before you start this to make sure you would even have buyers for the animals you breed.

    Yes.

You should choose a fish to breed based on WHAT THE FISH SHOP WILL TAKE.

Seriously, ask your intended fish shops BEFORE you start breeding.

DO NOT assume that fish shops will buy your fish. Many do not take in fish at all from the public, and if they do it is usually only certain species… hint hint, they usually only want the stuff that’s hard to breed!
