My fish aquarium recently started forming this brown stuff on my plants, small feeding plate (for my African Dwarf frogs), hiding cave and gravel. I THINK it’s brown algae, but I’m not sure. I don’t know exactly what has caused it, and I’m afraid that it could be toxic to my fish and frogs. I just cleaned the water and gravel two weeks ago, and I plan on cleaning it again today (I always clean it every two to three weeks). I have a carbon filter, which I change every time I clean the tank. I give the tank between 12 and 15 hours of light a day (which has made my plants very happy since I changed the amount of lighting months ago (it use to be only 5 to 7 hours a day)). I feed my fish and frogs once a day.
Also, my fish’s back fins seem to be shredding almost? And my male frogs seem to have gotten smaller and almost look pale-ish and sick. This started before the brown stuff and it got better after I cleaned the tank really well. What’s going on and could this be because of what’s going on in my tank right now? How can I fix it?
Here is what I have in my tank and the products I use for the tank:
- carbon filter
- gravel
- small swordtail plants
- small anubius plants
- small hide-y cave
- small terra cotta plate
- mixed guppies fish (6 – all male)
- beta (1 – male)
- golden zebra danio (1 – male?)
- African Dwarf frogs (4 – two male; two female)
- API Stress Coat (when I clean and add water/fish to the tank)
- API Leaf Zone (only when I change the water or the plants are looking “not so great”)
- API Melafix (my dad just got me this. I haven’t used it yet but I plan on it today)
- Aqueon Betta Bowl Plus (when clean the tank (should I use this or is the Stress Coat okay for bettas?))
- Aqueon Betta Food
- Omega One Freshwater Flakes
- HBI Frog and Tadpole Bites
The shredding of the fins and the brown stuff has only happened recently. I have never had any problems with the tank before this, and the fish, frogs and plants have always been happy. I don’t know what is going on. If you can help, that would be amazing. Thanks!
