Angelfish breeding questions?

Question by Clumsical ~Border Collie Love~: Angelfish breeding questions?
I recently purchased three angelfish, and will probably get two or three more later on.

I don’t particularly want my angelfish to breed, but I just want to know a few things. Will they start to get aggressive when they court each other? I’ve heard that a lot of cichlids can get aggressive, and part of the reason I even added the angelfish to the tank is because they aren’t supposed to be particularly aggressive.

How do you know they’ve started to court each other? I know they “pair off” but does that mean they stop schooling with the other angels in the tank?

Is there a way you can make the tank “unsuitable” for breeding without making it a stressful environment for the fish? As I said earlier, I don’t really want to encourage breeding, I am happy with just keeping the fish I have.

From breeding angel fish for years, I have found that they are not aggressive when they court each other. You’ll know they are a matched coupled because of how close the stay to each other. They seperate from the other fish when they are in the family way. The angle fish only breed in a warm water if you keep the water a bit cold, they won’t breed. Or you could just buy all males or females from an experinced breeder.

I need tips for making an inexpensive, but nice hermit crab “crabitat.”?

Question by Alison P: I need tips for making an inexpensive, but nice hermit crab “crabitat.”?
I had tons of hermit crabs when I was little and I really want to start that again. I know what they need and all but I have a few questions.
Because I don’t want those cheap plastic cages, are glass fish tanks alright? Will the heater that comes with the one I want work or do I need something else?
Are they any other ways I can naturally make a crabitat without spending a whole lot of money on food, dishes, and things for them to climb on?

glass fish tanks are ideal … i got a free 10 gallon and a free 5 gallon from craigslist for my crabnation … they do not hold water for fish but are fine for hermit crabs … you could not use a fish tank heater as those need to be submerged in water … the best bet would be to get an undertank heater such as the exo terra under tank heater (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/13138/product.web) … you would need a suitable substrate for them … home depot sells a bag of play sand for 5 dollars that will be enough for a year or two … you can make the water dishes from those zip-loc disposable containers, just bury in the substrate … make sure you have fresh and salt water for the crabs (salt as in marine salt not aquarium salt, and be sure both fresh and salt water are dechlorinated) … you can feed the crabs a variety of food that you and your family probably eat … fresh fruits and veggies … they need a form of calcium, a crushed up egg shell would do the trick … huts for them to hide in, you could just get a coconut from the grocery store, get someone to cut it in half and then you have two huts :O) i would invest in a humidity and temperature gauge, i bought one for under five dollars made by zoomed … and i personally would invest in stuff for them to climb on … if they are not in a stimulating environment, they are not going to be active or very stimulating to watch :O) if you want to get some good extra shells, check out ebay … i bought 35 shells, all different kinds, for under ten dollars …

Q&A: is my oscar good as dead to return him to the cruel petsmart store?

Question by The Jam: is my oscar good as dead to return him to the cruel petsmart store?
look, this is totally animal cruelty, when i bought him he had a disease called columnaris which quickly grew all over his body in 2 weeks, but for some reason it didnt affect my other fishes, 2. guess what?, only one of his gills moves, the other one just stays, and the one that moves looks like the gill is inside out, and goes in and out the fish’s head, isn’t this sick??, now the disease has took over him, i seriously do not have the time and the 100 dollars i need to cure this, so im just returning it to the sick petsmart oscar “fish tank” and see how they feel. NOW my question is so u dont say “this isnt a question u r just complaining about something”, have u seen an oscar with only one gill moving, and it moves inside out, and u can even see it?, is like out of the oscar’s head, is that normal??, was it petsmart’s fault so i can blame them even more??, i have already got 2 sick fish from there, and im sure other people has.
by the way, i had the appropiate tank(75 gallons) and tank supplies, etc, so i repeat dont blame me for being a bad fish keeper, i have never killed any other fish, but 2 crayfishes
no he was pretty big(8″), and its tank was pretty overcrowded with like 10 oscars in a 20 gallon tank. they all looked underweight when i saw them, but i guessed if i just fed it it would gain weight. but he was kept in my tank for only 1month and a half. then the disease sprouted very quickly in less than a week, now the fish looks like is about to pass out, although maracyn2 did help a lot, it still came back at the 6th day.
ya it was in this state(fair lakes), i usually look at the fishes health, before i buy them, but this oscar’s tank was above every other cichlid’s tank, and i was unable to take a good look at it, so it really was a waste of money and time with this fish. im defianetly telling them to let me know if the fish is sick before i buy it, otherwise is a big waste of time.
also, IT IS columnaris, im 100% sure, this fish has been viewed by owners with a lot of experience, and im defianetly 100% sure it is. here is a pic:

Betta always in attack mode?

Question by xwind9x: Betta always in attack mode?
I just recently got a betta and placed him in a half-gallon tank the day I got him. He was doing fine but I thought his tank was rather small so yesterday I got him a 1-gallon tank. When I transferred him to his new tank, he kept swimming at the side of the walls and poking it, a few hours later he began flaring at the walls and corners and couldn’t stay still. To me the tank looks clear, however I’m not sure what the betta sees, maybe his reflection? I got the “All-Glass Mini-Bow 1 Junior Aquarium Kit” from PetCo.

Should I buy a different tank or transfer him back to his old one? Is there anything I can do about his current tank? I don’t want to acclimate him into another tank again because that might be too much stress if he’s always moving homes. Any help?

Best answer:

Answer by Kylie Anne
you were right to transfer him to a larger tank, unfortunately 1g is still too small for a betta to thrive. he is undoubtedly seeing his reflection, there are a few things you can do to solve this if you wish to keep this tank (1g as I said is not great, but its livable because bettas are hardy). well placed plants, tank backgrounds, moving the tank (sometimes the way light is hitting i is the problem).

anyway, a much better choice would be to buy a least a 2g tank so you can purchase a 7.5watt heater. bettas are tropical fish and room temp is not ideal, instead a temp around 80*F is much more suitable. of course it’s your fish and your choice, but know his life will be shorter because he is not thriving in room temp, for him to thrive you’ll want a larger tank (think, bigger is always better as far as tanks go).

if price is a problem, here is a cheap cute idea:
http://www.petco.com/product/12031/Aquatic-Gardens-Deluxe-Plastic-Aquarium-With-Lid.aspx – the medium one, $ 10, probably cheaper, als there may be cheaper ones for the same size or larger in the small pet or reptile section, these are fine to use.

filter a sponge filter will do fine, but they don’t sell them at petco, so these are good:

heater:

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO KEEP THEIR AQUARIUMS CLEAN?

Question by candy: FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO KEEP THEIR AQUARIUMS CLEAN?
Ok, so how do you people do it? I do water changes very frequently, like 3 times a week and the water’s still not as clean as the ones I see at pet shops or public aquariums. Whenever I ask the people who work there, they just reply with “frequent water changes”, which I do but isnt helping much. Does anyone have another strategy to keep the tank nice and clean?
-10 gallon tank
-i have one pearlscale in it
-i have a light, but I don’t turn it on because i think it makes the temp of the water rise
-i have a filter
-the water is just a little cloudy white, never as clean as the pet shop’s, even right after a water change.
i do a 10%-20% water change

Answer by kouneli
Well, what’s the size of your tank? Does it have a filter? What kind of creatures do you have in it? How long was the tank set up before you got fish in there? Why do you say it looks dirty? Is it a cloudy white? If it’s a cloudy white, that’s simply sediment needing to settle. Too many water changes can prevent it from settling, and it will continue to look cloudy. I only do a 10% water change once a week for all 3 of my fish tanks. I’ve never had a problem with dirty water (except when a friend dumped the entire container of fish food in there).

Platypus Platy Preserve Wine Preserver, 800ml (4 pack)

  • Extends the life of your wine
  • Minimizes oxygen exposure
  • Air tight reservoir to truly protect the taste
  • Collapsible container offers an easy, light-weight alternative to pack
  • Select materials ensure superior leak protection and provide zero taste transfer

Whether you are a connoisseur, an enthusiast or a casual admirer of wine, one truth remains: the delicate taste profiles of wine change upon exposure to oxygen. That means wine is best enjoyed within a few hours of being opened. If not properly preserved, wine can go bad in as little as 2 to 8 hours. PlatyPreserve is the best way to protect the taste of an opened bottle of wine by completely eliminating the presence of oxygen. While alternative methods might have you pump air out of the bottle o

Winging it? Cycling aquarium…?

Question by Chocolate Crunch <3: Winging it? Cycling aquarium…?
I just ordered a 5 gallon aquarium kit and I don’t really know when it is supposed to come but I’m going out to buy the water condtioner, decor, gravel, and betta food on the day it comes.
I’m kinda on a slight budget (ok…I’m 12 and spent most of my “fish” money at the mall) so I don’t have the money for a water test kit :-O

I’m going to have a betta and some shrimp in the tank when it’s done cycling. Since I’m doing fishless cycling though, what is a good sorce of ammonia? I was thinking fish food but It’s kinda messy :P I don’t mind cleaning the tank/filter though if it gets too “cloudy” or “messy”. My big problem is no stores in this town sell PURE AMMONIA! It’s killing me inside and I don’t know what to do about it X_x Here is what I plan on doing though for the cycling prosses;

-Set up tank and stuff
-Fill water 60% of the way so the filter creates a “waterfall” effect and lets more oxygen threw to help the aquarium cycle faster
-keep water in mid 80s to speed up cycling prosses (I’ll lower the temp to about 75 though when I add the fish)
-Use fish food or something for sorce of ammonia :P I really don’t know about this part :(

So yea… I was thinking about just waiting a month to do a big water change and then hope for the best when I add fish. I don’t have the money for a test kit (let alone one of those fancy liquid testing things). So I think winging it would be the best way to go on this. So here are my questions:

**How to speed up cycling prosses (besides what I have listed)?**

**How to START the cycling prosses?**

**Is a month a good estimate about how long the cycling prosses will take?**

**Any good tips on fin rot (from a different question I asked…Link at bottom)?**

when you get your tank, fill it right up (not 60%) with dechlorinated water, start the filter and heater … bettas like 80 degrees … 24 hours later put your fish in … no need to get all complicated … you can put a betta in an uncycled tank with no problem whatsoever … the betta will cycle the tank … after the tank has been running a month, month and a half, you can add some shrimp … one suggestion i could add is get some indian almond leaves and add a 1-2 inch piece every water change … they are very beneficial for bettas and your fish will not get sick …
