Would i be able to raise baby sunfish in a 10 gallon tank?

Question by KDHeine: Would i be able to raise baby sunfish in a 10 gallon tank?
For my biology project, i am wanting to take baby sunfish (or pumpkinseed fish approx: 2-3″ long max) from our school pond ( this is allowed and legal) and raise them in a 10 gallon filtered/heated tank. They are living in pretty cold water conditions in their natural environment as it is now, so im not sure the heater is necessary, but anyway, i would only be keeping them for about 5 months, and then releasing them. We want to see if we can mimic their habitat and what not, and see if they will be able to thrive the environment we create. Would 5 or 6 two inch baby sunfish be ok in a 10 gallon tank for around 5 months? any tips on what you would do? or think i should do? i have kept freshwater fish for years, just nothing from the wild. Thanks in advance for all your help….

it should be fine and if there not tropical fish then you don’t need the heater

hell no

sorry but i was going to tell you a 1 incher or so would be fine for a while but no way can five or six 2-3 inch fish going to make it in a 10 gallon

This Pacific Sunfish is currently in the MBA’s large open ocean tank. Since I was very young, I’ve been fascinated by marine wildlife. I grew up on a lake where the most common fish we caught was, what we called, a sunfish, and I remember reading in books about a mysterious, and massive ocean sunfish. 17 years later, I finally get to see one. This guy puts those tiny, puny freshwater fish to shame. Pacific Sunfish look unlike anything you’ve ever seen, they truly are enormous. I would guess the fish I saw was probably 7 feet wide from fin tip to fin tip.

After fishing, I had a ton of new plants I pulled in. Some of the plants, I pulled in by hand because they looked like they were in pretty good condition for the aquarium.
