Texas Cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus)

The Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus, formerly Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum) is a freshwater fish of the cichlid family. Also known as Rio Grande cichlid, this species is originated from the lower Rio Grande drainage in Texas and Northeastern Mexico, particular on the sandy bottom of deep rivers. This is the only cichlid species native to the United States, and has been introduced by man as far North as Central Texas where they live in various lakes and rivers. (wikipedia)
Community Fish Tank: Fresh Water Aquarium This is the Catspit Productions fresh water community aquarium or fish tank. It is about 8 months after the first aquarium video was posted. Since then I have had to remove all live plants due to fish eating them. They just wouldn’t let them grow. I also had a bout with ick and lost several fish over time. That was ok because I wanted to add better fish. So this is the new and improved aquarium. This tank is a 20 gallon, high with 2 Aquaclear outboard or hanging filters. One filter is a #70 or 300 gallons per hour filtration and it is set up like a normal filter with carbon, ammo carb, and filter medium. The second filter is a #50 or a 150 gallon per hour filtration. This smaller unit is set up with activated charcoal only. This is like a booster for clarity and toxins. It works very well and I can go over the maximum number of fish allowed for this volume tank. About 20 to 25 fish up to 1.5 inches each. This tank is about 1 and 1/2 years old and has been moved once. All of the plants are live but rather new. With a plecostomus and catfish, the tank is literally self cleaning. The filters are cleaned and changed once every month and that is all. Very easy maintenance. The light is a standard fluorescent tube that is left on for daylight simulation and turned off for night mode. The light is set on a timer. A few of the fish are over 2 years old and have been with the tank since the beginning. Royalty Free Music Credits: “Long Note …

While I suppose you could get all of them, some of them are fin nippers…might be a little nasty towards the long finned ones. Although the tank is a pretty good size so that should be fine.
I would look into Red Tailed/brilliant Rasboras, I personally love the little guys. They make beautiful schools and are very lively. Corydoras and otos make good cleaners, as do shrimp. (Cherry, Ghost ect…)
Maybe something pretty, like male guppies? Might not be for you (and the fin nippers!) but they can be quite gorgeous.
Well, there is my point of view.

A window into the endless, mysterious world of open waters; the Jelly Fish exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The stunning one-million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit is home to the largest community of open-ocean animals to be found in any aquarium. Giant bluefin tuna power their way through the water. Hammerhead sharks circle inches away. Sea turtles cruise lazily by.
The Outer Bay also features the largest permanent collection of jellyfish species in the United States. Egg-yolk jellies and sea nettles drift gently in ten-foot-long exhibits beautifully lit to accentuate the jellies’ delicate beauty. Comb jellies pulse with rainbow bands of light as they swim.
Question by The Gray Blob o.O: Are you unsure of what fish you want to put in your aquarium?
Lots of people ask this question. However…the reality is, there are easily over a thousand species of fish that are commonly kept in an aquarium. You should use a search engine or visit a store to get an idea of what you want. Come back with one or a few fish that you are interested in, and include your tank size. Then we can give you some suggestions based on those few fish you want. Good luck with your aquarium!

It’s great advice to take. Research is always key to a healthy tank. Know what you want, what will fit and what will get along in your tank before you buy or you just waste money and time.
