Should I keep the filter on my Fish Tank on 24/7?

Question by Skillz: Should I keep the filter on my Fish Tank on 24/7?
I am a first time aquarium buyer.. Do I keep the filter on all the time or what times?

Best answer:

Answer by rainsawck
Yes, leave it on at all times, unless otherwise directed by such things as medicine applications. It will build beneficial bacteria on the filter pad, and run the water through the carbon to keep ammonia low. It will also add ripples to the water, increasing the water’s oxygen transfer rate and preventing stagnation.

how do install my wet/dry filter without bulkheads at the bottom of my aquarium?

You need to buy a siphon kit or drill some holes in your tank and make an overflow. I recommend buying a tank with an internal overflow. It’s cool and easy to set up. Only catch is it is not cheap.

Question by Margie: how to figure out the cost of running an aquarium heater and filter?
my dad is flipping out because the electric is going up soon, and I have a few fish tanks. he’s telling me I have to get rid of them and I told him I’ll pay him whatever the cost is to keep the tanks running…
so how do I figure out how much electric my tanks are using?
I keep telling my dad my tanks barely use anything, I have 4 of them and they’re all under 20gallons! he just has it in his head that my fish are using up $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $
… you know, not him leaving the tv while he goes out back for an hour or eats dinner in another room! those obviously use less.

has anyone ever used a sand filter on their fish tank? and how did it do for your tank?

Question by Jimmy E: has anyone ever used a sand filter on their fish tank? and how did it do for your tank?
i’m lookin to use a sand filter on my aquarium, just want to know what people thought.

Are you referring to the fluidized sand bed filters, like the ones made by Pentair Aquatics?

If yes, I have used these in the past and they are very good biological filters. You should still run a filter for mechanical and chemical filtration, but as far as biological filters I have been very happy with them.

Q&A: How long should I wait before adding more fish to my saltwater aquarium?

Question by micahbrown89: How long should I wait before adding more fish to my saltwater aquarium?
I just set up my 72 gallon saltwater aquarium. Once I got the water ready and the filter hooked up and everything I added a few starter damsel fish. 3 to be exact. Im doing this to get the biological filteration going in the tank and to get all the good bacteria acclimated to everything. How long should I wait before adding more expensive fish? When will the biological filtration get adjusted to the point where it can handle all kinds of fish?

Answer by jdaugherty3
You need to do some research. First of all, you can achieve the same results as the damsels for cycling, by using a pinch of flake food everyday instead. Much more humane to do that. Then test your water weekly, until you have 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and less then 20 Nitrate. Once you are at these levels, you can SLOWLY add more fish. Wait 4-6 weeks between fish additions. This will allow the biofilter time to catch up to the new demand on it. Read some books, and have lots of paitence!

How do I fit the Aquarium lid over my filter?

Question by Galinda: How do I fit the Aquarium lid over my filter?
I bought a kit yesterday – a 20gal tank that came with a power filter and a lid (with light in it).
But the lid doesn’t fit over the filter – there is a space for it (6.5″) but it’s not cut out or even perforated. Am I suppose to cut it out myself?
It’s Hagen – yeah it was a kit but it was 1/2 off – maybe that’s why ;) . Here’s a pic

What are my options for protecting my fish from a powerful filter?

Question by Skye M: What are my options for protecting my fish from a powerful filter?
My filter is not overpowered for my 30-gallon aquarium, but I have seen fish being sucked to the side of the intake hose. The most recent victim was able to get away, but the first was not so lucky. I would like to cover or shield the fish from the intake hose, but don’t want want to take away from its ability to clean.

Additional info: Many of my fish are small. The fish that was able to escape was a larger cichlid.

Here’s a great link that someone gave me that reduces current flow.

Or you could put girls’ tights over the nozzle; that will stop them getting sucked in but won’t stop the large current.
