Question by sara n: I have a bubbler and a filter, but for some reason, my fish have started swiming at the top, why?
I have had the filter since I started my aquarium, and I just recently added the bubbler and a heater the other day.. every since then, my fish have been swimming at the top.. by the way I have Zebra Danios

Is the heat set correctly, if its a hot day my cichlids swim to the top. I think the temperature for zebras will be around 24-26 measure the temp with a thermometer

Question by baby g: How often do you change the whole filter system in your fish tank?
I change the filter every two weeks but the filter system itself looks really dirty because of all the crusty residue from the aquarium water building up on the sides. Do you suppose to change the whole filter system every year?

I have a filter that has 3 different baggies with different things in them to help clean the water.
i replace all of them every time i clean the fish tank ( every 3 months)
if you dont have a very good filter, clean it every month

i usually dont use carbon in my filter but i am finishing up treating my aquarium with api general cure as a preventive because i just added a new fish and i want to quarantine him.its a 10 gallon and i want to know, no.1 if i really need to add carbon after treatment and no2. if so how long should i keep it in until i can remove the carbon once again? thanks!

Okay, I currently own a male betta, and I would like to upgrade to a community aquarium. I plan on getting a 29 gallon aquarium from PetCo. What fish (and how many) can I add to the tank? I would like some kuhli loaches if I can, and some common, easy-to-care-for species that won’t clash with the betta. And if anybody has any filter recommendations, don’t hesitate. And does my community aquarium need lights? I will not have live plants in it. Thanks for any info!

I am not sure about keeping a Loach and Betta together. They are both peaceful, and have similar water and temperature requirements. However, Bettas prefer moderate to good lighting, while Loaches like subdued lighting. I really don’t know if they can be kept harmoniously or not.
What I do know that works well, would be a trio of Corydora catfish (must be kept in groups of 3 or more). They clean up uneaten food from the bottom of the tank, and are just a lot of fun to watch. Never had a problem keeping them with a Betta.
Another species that works well are Platies. They come in lots of pretty colors and patterns, and always get on well with Bettas.

That sounds like you got some tainted water somewhere that was way high on nitrates or nitrites and you have a bacteria of some kind growing. I would start first with a tap water test to see what is in your tap water, and also test the nitrates and nitrite levels on your tank. You may also need to clean the tank top to bottom, and see if that helps too. There also are some commercial treatments for bad water, but first you need to find the cause, and I would lay odds it is something in the water or something that was added to the tank like shells or a rock or mineral that is not tank approved, or even wood. Yes you can. It clogs a little faster usually but it works well. The batting for quilting is also a good choice, it’s often easier to work with in a filter.

Question by Shadow: Can you use Filstar Nitra-Zorb without a canister filter?
I’m trying this stuff in one of my two filters on my 36 gallon aquarium so it can lower ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite. Though I didnt know it was for canister filters, can I still use it in one of my filters or should I just take it out? Since the bag is kinda big I had to take out the regular filter cartridge to make room.

Even though its for a canister filter you may still be able to use it. You have a power filter? if so you can just put it in the filter because it is a high flow area. and it should be just fine.

Question by stacy d: Help! I need a diagram of an aquarium H.O.T. power filter. Bought it used & can’t figure out how to set-up!
It’s a Niagara 100 w/ a whisper 600 motor for a 30 gallon tank. Maybe someone knows of a web site that can help me??

how about going to a pet store or aquarian place that sells them and ask their advice. other than that have you searched the internet. google is a good search tool.
