Question About Beneficial Bacteria?

I have a few questions about the bacteria that convert waste in an aquarium.
1. Where do they live? I have heard they are in the water, in the filter, in the gravel, and on the ornaments. Is this true?
2. If I have 5 fish, I can only have enough bacteria in my aquarium to live off of 5 fishes’ waste. If there was more bacteria, they would starve to death. So, why do people add so much biological filtration to their aquariums? People go crazy about sponges and bio balls and bio wheels and ceramic rings, saying the more the better. If you can only have a certain amount of bacteria in the first place, why add so much stuff when most likely, there won’t be enough bacteria to colonize everything?
3. Won’t UV sterilizers kill the beneficial bacteria?
4. Are the beneficial bacteria in a freshwater aquarium the SAME EXACT ones that live in a salt water aquarium? Can I use a colonized filter from a freshwater aquarium to jump start a marine tank? Vice versa?
That’s all I can think of, but I will let you know if I think of anything else. Thank you in advance for your help.

Okay To Use Marine Stress Coat On A Freshwater Fish?

So a friend of mine has a sick fish, I’ve taken care of fish before so I offer to try and help. This fish has fish fungus. I take a look at her stress coat added to the water and it’s called “stress coat marine with aloe vera.”
I found this pretty rediculous, but is this marine stresscoat hurting a betta fish? Should we use it in his healing tank, or should I make her go and get some regular stress coat?
Extra info: We plan to use aquarium salt and a fish fungal dosage with the stress coat. Let me know if you feel this is overmedicating as well.

Is There A Way Not To Perform Weekly Water Changes In A Marine Aquarium?

I was thinking of keeping 3 clownfish and one anemone in a 250 litre tank with sand, liverock, marine plants. Filtration by a canister filter and a top filter. Temp control by heater and chiller. And a protein skimmer. I would cycle the tank for a month before adding fish. My question is, is there a way I don’t have to do weekly water changes and keep the same water all along? It is because, sea water(artificial) costs Rs.11 per litre which is waaaayyy too costly for me if I have to do 20% water change weekly. I don’t mind adding an expensive equipment to keep the water fresh all along, as an initial investment. Thank you. Or should I drop the idea of owning nemo? :(

What Subjects/courses/experience Etc. Would I Need To Work At An Aquarium Centre/sealife Place?

I know its long but PLEASE read!
I’m sixteen, I’m in a tricky crisis about my career and subjects choices.
Basically i want to work in an aquarium sort of place working with fish etc. like this : http://www.visitsealife.com/Bray/ ive always loved fish and going to seaworld and throughout my life ive kept several fish tanks, im starting to get into tropical fish right now an hope to keep marine type fish some day far into the future too haha .
I was just wondering what i would need? i live in ireland just to make things clearer.
Ive picked my subjects not too wisely that i am to do for my last two years of school: French, history, technical design graphics (dont even know what it is, never done it before) and Biology. I can possibly change it if i get there in time.
Would i definitely need to do a college course on marine biology to do all of this stuff? could i get some work experience maybe when i leave school at my nearest aquatic centre (the one in the link) and just how should i go about this?
Also i dont want to be working with dolphins jumping through hoops or anything, just any kinds of marine and tropical fish/creatures.
Please advise me here, i would appreciate it alot.

Can My Ro Unit Be A Replacement For Water Conditioner In Freshwater?

i bought a 125 gal. aquarium and am going to use a Kent Marine Hi-S RO unit. it says its a model RO 120 Hi-S. i am going to use it for the saltwater, like i said, but am wondering if it could be used for freshwater too. i have a 20 gallon freshwater tank with tropical fish in it. because of the heat, water has been evaporating and my tank has less water than when it started. i make full water changes and took out the water and the fish and that is how i fill it with water. my last one was 2 weeks ago and i filled it to the top before adding the conditioner. i am asking if the unit can be a replace stabilizer, because i don’t want to be cleaning it just because of the water evaporating. and if i can, should i be prepared for anything to happen? it know how it operates. and if you have any guidelines to using it can you tell me?
