Can you use a 50 watt heater in a 2.5 gallon aquarium?

I temporarily have a new guppy in a 2.5 gallon tank until I get a 5 gallon set up. I just got her today and she has ich, so she needs a heater. I know that size heater is typically for 10 gallons, but you can adjust the temp, so would that matter or not? If so I will just have to wait till I get my check on friday and buy a smaller one, so I was just wondering.

An oversize heater will cycle on and off more often, which does not use more energy or overheat the water, but it does wear on the heater components. If an oversize heater sticks, it will heat the water up much hotter than the right size heater, although either one sticking would probably be enough to do in all the fish unfortunate enough to be in such a tank.

Yes, if the 50-watt heater will fit in the tank. It’s much more power than you need, but the only danger is that it will overheat the tank faster if the thermostat malfunctions.

Be sure you are using a good ich medication, in addition to heat.

    yes that will be ok.

A good quality heater will shut off at the right temp and not screw up and will be fine.
