Can you put a sea horse in an aquarium?

How much do they usually cost at a pet shop? And are they cold water or tropical? My son is wanting one! Thanks for replies

A sea horse is a marine fish, meaning that it needs salt water. Salt water tanks are no easy task. They require just the right water parameters. pH, salinity, etc. And you have to check it weekly. I’m not sure what a sea horse would cost to buy, but you’re looking at no smaller than a 55 Gallon fish aquarium which will require special lighting- especially if you want to decorate with coral. Then if you have a power outage, you should have a back-up battery-powered filter. If it’s just something that you want to get for your son, you might just want to try and talk him into getting a gold fish or something- especially if your son is young. Otherwise you’re in for a lot of work, and Marine tanks aren’t for the inexperienced. Good luck!

they are usually salt water. i never seen fresh water ones before. im not sure how much they cost. but there not too cheap. because they are a rare and tropical animal. if you get one make sure you have enough money to at least get 2. they are very social and will get really lonely and it can effect, if they eat and then they wont be healthy. and he might die. so he needs a friend. good luck.

sea horses are salt water. they are expensive. i wanted a tank of seahorses but you cant put anything else in with them. they would die if you do. sea horse are very calm. they basically latch on to a plant and stay there. when you feed them they wait for the food to float down to them…so if you had other fish they would never get any food…and die.

The cost of the seahorses is not the problem, it’s that you need a full tropical marine tank setup to house them, then they need live food (living brine shrimp etc) to survive.

Not a project for a beginner fish keeper. It will probably suck up several thousand dollars setting it up properly, and require a lot of very exact care to keep them alive.

It’s not that it cant be done, it’s just not a beginner thing.

Steer your son toward some interesting freshwater tropical fish, or something like a Yabby ( freshwater crayfish). Much cheaper and easier to care for.

Technically yes but you would have to maintain it closely, seahorses are salt water creatures and would barely move if put into a tank, they are very expensive and would probably die if you had more animals in with one. Sooooo technically yes, but no.

All my 10+ year old silver dollars died after I changed my filter (Whisper Bio Bag) and added 4 gal of fresh water to their 55 gal tank. Clue?
