Can I Mix Guppies With Tetras?

I have just recently set up a tropical aquarium, and currently have 4 neons and 4 penguin tetras. I was told in the shop that you can’t mix diferent types i.e. tetras and livebearers or barbs. Is this true, as I would like to put some guppies in there.

Guppies and tetras are fine together, although the tetras may eat the guppy babies.
BUT tetras are more ph sensitive, so use the ideal ph for your tetras, not for the guppies.

People do it all the time,mixing egglayers and livebearers that is. How ever in the strictest sense this isn’t always good for both types,for instance your tetras should be in soft water with a low pH,while guppies do better in water with a dash of salt,moderate hardness,and a pH in the 7 to 8 range. So in that case some one is living in less than ideal conditions. The best way to stock an aquarium is to find out what kind of water conditions come out of your tap,and keep the kinds of fish that will do the best given your prevailing water conditions. It is difficult and stressful to the fish to live in a tank in which the water conditions are constantly changing. I wonder what was going on in the pet sales persons head?
You could mix guppies and small tetras. In there Amazon region neon tetras and guppies live together. Large tetras are not good for guppies because they will kill guppies. The thing people have for not mixing tetras and live bearers is that guppies and other live bearers like very alkaline water and like 1 tps of AQUARIUM salt per 5 gallons of a tank. When fish get sick, AQUARIUM salt is a remedy for sick fish, but when a fish is already in a salty enviorment, the slat doesn’t do them very good. So its mostly better to keep live bearers together, but you could always mix other types and experiment!:)

Guppies and Neons Tetras are great tank buddies. The neons need to be in a large group though. They prefer to school together. If you dont get enough of them the neons may not be very active. Keep in mind that all the adult fish will eat the babies of either type fish. Guppies and Neons compliment each other beautifully in color. Exspecailly if you have more female guppies than males. although my females have been getting more and more colorful as well. Good luck and have fun!
All the guppies and tetras i’ve had were the best of buddies… They got along just fine. so the answer would be yes!
Totally untrue. You most certainly can mix different types of fish in a tank successfully. You do need to be careful about which ones you select however. For example, Tiger barbs love to nip at other fishes fins and would be a poor choice for a tank with fancy guppies, a male betta or other fish with longer fins. Look up each fish and know it’s adult size and general habits before you by the fish and you will be far ahead of the typical aquarium keeper and well on your way to a great community tank.
