Can an Aquarium Heater Burn My Starfish?

I bought a chocolate chip starfish not too long ago for my 10g to clean up the sand, and he does a wonderful job! The only thing I’m a little concerned about is after he’s done hanging out at his own personal jacuzzi (a volcano that blows bubbles), he likes to climb on top of the heater and I don’t know if it will burn him. He’s a wonderful addition to my tank and I don’t want to see him get hurt, so will the heater hurt him if he climbs on a certain part of it, or will he all right? This is the heater I have now:

He will possibly get burnt. Try put the heater in front of a strong current to discourage your starfish

Hope nothing bad happens to him

i highly doubt it. i mean would you hang around something that will hurt you? but then again he might not know and get himself hurt. but honestly when the heater is submerged in water it is barely warm.

i second lovelyprincess’s answer… additionally you should look into a more ambient heater. im PRAYING you have no real fish or coral in that tank- choc’s eat coral and that tank is too small for 99% of saltwater fish. Id take out the volcano that blows bubbles… in a tank that small that sort of additional air in the tank might cause funky pH changes at night

Your chocolate chip will be just fine. If the heater gets too hot he’ll just let go and fall to the bottom. ps I think a volcano that blows bubbles is cool. Peace

no it will not burn him, it doesn’t get that hot he will be fine. My concern is your starfish wonders quite a bit. Are you target feeding him? Usually chocolate will wonder along the bottom but rarely will they roam from floor to decorations or walls and heaters unless they are in search of food. I would suggest target feeding your CC at least once per week to ensure he is eating enough food.

If he keeps going to it, it is obviously not bothering the little guy. He is the best source to find out if it is burning him. Hope this helps!!!
