Aquarium Salt – Neon Tetras and Ghost Shrimp?

Today, without thinking I bought 4 neon tetras and 3 ghost shrimp for my freshwater tank. I forgot about having salt in my fish tank. I had about 8 teaspoons in my 29 gallon tank. I did a 1/4 water change today So probably only 6 teaspoons were in it now. I just added 1 more teaspoon to help the mollies and guppies i bought tonight as well and help ward off any disease (it helps, right?) It’s hard to find healthy fish. :/

Anyways will the neon tetras and ghost shrimp be ok in the salt? :X
I’d also like to say some of my fish are rubbing against things a bit…. idk what to do about that, but I know that means they have some kind of fungus.
Any ideas how to help them survive without having to go out and buy a 20$ medicine?
I’ve used medicine, but it’s like 15$ and 75% of the time it doesn’t do anything from my experience. It’s hard to diagnose what a fish has until it’s too late.

Also, to the first person answers – Don’t spam my question please I don’t need your idiotic try-to-be-funny answers and I will report it. Hopefully yahoo will do something about it.
Teaspoons, not tablespoons. And thanks for the advice. I’ll turn up the heat. It’s set to 77 at the moment.

Yes it helps. But its use is for healing/helps with proper gill function.Your little ones will be just fine and i think they actually will appreciate the salt.

If its a fungus:then you would be able to see it clearly on the fishes body.Fuzzy dots(ick),pop eye, or fin rot ect……

Medicine is the best bet. After use of medicine do a 50% water change to get remaining medicine out.

neon tetras and ghost shrimp dont really like salt. it sounds like you are adding a lot of unecessary salt. the general rule at most is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. it helps to ward of disease but the most important thing is that they have clean water, good food, and a heater. if they are stressed then their immune system will get weaker.

if they are rubbing against the gravel constantly then they probably have ich. the easiest way to cure this is:
    1. add salt (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons)
2.vaccum/siphon the gravel every other day
3.make sure the temperature of the tank is at least 79 degrees farenheit

when my mollies got ich for the first time i found that they did not get better until i bought the heater

You’re fine. Your fish should be able to handle 7 teaspoons per 29 gallons. Neons and Ghost shrimp can handle a bit of salt. You could add a few more teaspoons if you really wanted. Aquarium salt kinda helps and kinda doesn’t. It induces slime coat production which helps with illness. Other than that, it doesn’t do much unless the illness is vulnerable to salt (Ich and other protozoan parasites.

Rubbing on objects doesn’t mean fungus. Fungus in aquariums is actually very rare. All it means is there’s some irritation going on. It could be them adapting to a new pH, getting used to the salt content, or generally adapting to a new home. It can mean there’s another factor.. such as a skin infection or an external parasite… but it doesn’t make it a sure thing. It is a red flag to watch for, but unless you can identify the exact problem, all you can do right now is observe.

I wouldn’t buy any medication just yet unless you can identify the problem with 100% certainty.
