The light you linked would give you “moderate” lighting. You will have to change the bulbs though as the standard issue is pretty poor for plants. You may be able to find a better deal. Their used price is like 10 dollars cheaper than you can buy it new. Just a quick search of my favorite sites pulled up a 36″ 78 watt T-5 HO fixture on sale for $79 at .

All that aside, I can see it being a good fixture for a planted aquarium once proper bulbs are installed. Look for 5500k to 7000k bulbs..

As to whether or not it’s worth it.. well that’s up to you. I love my planted aquariums. Not only do they look good, but the plants absorb a lot of the nitrates which means I can fit a few more fish in. It gives fish a nice place to hide, and provides a more natural aquascape.

Planted tanks are a bit more work.. if you’re not up for it, may want to stick with fake plants. Don’t need fancy lighting and they can look good too.
