african butterfly fish tank mates?

I might get an african butterfly fish if I can convince my dad into keeping my fish tank or if my fish will go with them but if they don’t.I have a spare tank with nothing in it but I don’t want just a butterfly fish in it so do you know any tankmates?

They are generally a good community fish although they may eat small fish.
They can be a bit intolerant of other surface swimming fish however, and have been known to nip fins. The Butterfly Fish like a loosely planted shallow aquarium best, about 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm) deep. One that has more length and width to it rather than depth gives them a large surface area. They do like some floating plant cover to lurk under as well. Be sure you have a good cover on the aquarium as this fish is an excellent jumper

Avoid top dwelling fish as they might get abit snappy but they are generally peaceful with fish over two inches. Mid to bottom dwellers such as loach or plec are a good idea, if the tank is big enough a red tail shark but they can be boisterous and cause havoc. avoid angel fish and gouramis. mollies might do and larger tetras in a shoal of atleast 6. barbs might be too snappy for them.

I think the other two that have answered are a little confused between upside down catfish and AFRICAN BUTTERFLY CICHLID.The butterfly cichlid is manly a bottom dwelling fish,so therefore mid swimmers and top swimmers would be better tank mates. This would give the butterfly the bottom to him self.House with peaceful schooling fish.
It is almost impossible to list tank mates without knowing your tank size. The butterfly cichlid may not do well without atleast one of it`s own kind.
