A couple of tropical fish questions(semi-aggressive and gourami)?
Can I mix semi-aggressive and tropical community fish happily, or will my community fish get eaten? Is there a way I can avoid those problems?
Do gourami fish need brackish water, or are they able to thrive in fresh too? I really like them, but I’m not sure it’s worth a whole new set-up for a brackish tank.
I was just at the fish store and the card on the gourami tanks said they required aquarium salt, I took this to mean brackish water?
I have: cherry barbs, glassfish, platty, neon tetras, Buenos Aires tetras, hifin pleco, and African dwarf frogs. They all do fine together(knock on wood). I really love some of the semi-agressive types, but don’t want my current population to become food. Sorry I don’t know what I would want specifically.

theres aggressive, semi aggressive, and peaceful “tropical community fish”. if you’re asking if semi aggressive and peaceful can be mixed together..its a yes and no. it depends what fish. you dont want to add a semi aggressive fish like an anglefish, with peaceful neon tetras–they’ll get eaten.
add on details of what fish you’re thinking about mixing, and i can help you out more…but if youre asking if you can mix a gourami with other fish..the answer is yes.
gouramis dont need brackish water. they are freshwater. i have one in my 55g tank with other freshwater fish :] dwarf gouramis are more peaceful, and the bigger ones (gold, and 3spot/blue) gouramis are more aggressive. they are territorial, so only get one.
petsmart and petco will say most of the fish need a small amount of salt..but you dont. its fine. like i said, cant help ya out much if you dont have any idea..but gouramis will be ok with the fish you mentioned, i can atleast say that for you.
There are no hard and fast rules about what is community and what is semi-aggressive. You just need to pick fish that are generally compatible in size and temperment.
For instance Bala sharks are peacefull ‘community’ fish, but you wouldn’t want to go keeping them with neon tetras. They can swallow them whole when they are fully grown.
Likewise you can keep some larger community fish with some more aggresive species.
Gourami are fresh water – you must be confusing them with something else.
