5 gallon saltwater aquarium setup and ideas.?
by Aquaboy on Monday, June 21st, 2010 | 5 Comments
I just cleaned out my 5 gallon aquarium. It was just a freshwater Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 Intergrated Aquarium, so it has an attached filter. I was hoping that someone could give me a list of what I need to convert it into a saltwater aquarium. I know that it is hard to keep the water parameters stable, but I have been able to keep the parameters stable for my 55 and 5 gallon aquariums. Also, i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I should stock it. I would like to have at least one piece of small coral and some live rock. But, I am willing to use fake rock if needed. Thanks for any response!!!
I am not too worried about not having one, but I was just wondering.

Sorry to tell you but… 10gallon is pretty much minimum for saltwater and thats for EXPERTS.
If you kept a 5 gallon salt, it would be NEAR TO IMPOSSIBLE to keep the water levels correct and you would have to be an 3x EPERT EXPERT EXPERT.
Sorry to tell you!
The smaller the saltwater aquarium the harder to maintain, especially for beginners.
If you had a 5 gallon, you could have like ONE fish. A 5 gallon is much too small for a salt water tank. I had a 14 gallong and it was very hard to upkeep.
ZZZZ is incorrect.
People do pico reef tanks in salt water all the time. Reef is what you’d have if you have coral. Pico describes a SW tank that is under 10 gallons. Nano is under 30 gallons. The smallest I have seen is a .4 gallon (yes, that is POINT four). Of course, that is coral only. A lot of people on Nanoreef.com are fascinated with seeing how small they can go. So 5 gallons is not in the least uncommon.
Here’s a link to a pic of a pico in a one gallon vase.

My recommendation to you in regards to doing -any- 5 gallon SW tank is to go to http://www.nano-reef.com/
And do some research and lurking and learning.
My suspicion is that you’ll find that your filtration and lighting are insufficient, and you’ll have to DIY the tank to make it work. Lots of people there would be willing to help you, though.
The problem I have, personally, with hex tanks is that there’s not much lateral space. It’s all vertical, and vertical is not what most fish need.
However, if this will be your first SW tank, I highly recommend that you start larger.
OR research for a really long time first!
Keeping stable params in FW is not really tricky, not even in a 5 gal.
Keeping them in SW is absolutely tricky, even in large tanks.
Good luck and have fun researching and learning!
Reefs can be fun and fascinating (and expensive!).
5 gallon is too small for marine fish, and even for experts is hard to look after. I would suggest keeping to freshwater and getting something like a betta or about 3 dwarf puffer fish. No shoals like neon tetras as they need 10 gal and NO goldfish they need 30 gal
hope this helps
