24 gallon Nano Cube- Video 1

Aquarium: 24 gallon JBJ Nano Cube. Set up in 2004. Equipment: Current USA 150W 14K Metal Halide sunpod, Current USA 1/15th hp chiller, aquamedic air driven protein skimmer powered by a Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Rena Air 300, Stealth 50W heater, maxijet 1200 circulation pump. Filtration: 1st chamber Skimmer, 2nd chamber stock sponge with Seachem Matrix Carbon on top of sponge, 3rd chamber heater and circulation pump. Testing & H2O Parameters: Aquarium Pharmaceuticals nitrate, ph, and Kh test kits, Salifert calcium test kit all done weekly. ph maintained at 8.3, Kh at 12-14 degrees, nitrates 25 mg/l or less, calcium 380-400 ppm. Maintenance & Supplements: 25% water change performed monthly, roughly 4.5 gallons, by siphoning sand to remove detritus. 100% Nutri Sea Water made by World Wide Imports is all I use. Top off water is made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Filter which produces deionized water then seachem Reef Builder dissolved in it to help boost Kh. seachems Aquavitro (amazing product line) 8.4 I use to maintain ph & Kh, Calcification which has both inorganic and organic forms of calcium in it, and Fuel for amino acid and Iodine supplementation. Marc Weisss Reef Vital DNA is used to help prime coralline algae prevents ich from adhering to the fishs skin. This product acts like a coral Viagra and makes all the corals open up. All supplements are added about twice a week. Fish: True Percula Clown pair, Royal Gramma, Regal Blue Tang (5 yrs old), Black Saddleback

Thanks Joel. Nano tanks or all-in-one systems come with all of the proper lighting, filtration, and water flow to grow corals and maintain a reef environment. JBJ Nano Cubes and Oceanic BioCUbes are the most popular. All tanks go through a beginning cycling process that takes 7-10 days with live rock in a reef tank and 4-6 weeks in freshwater. Check out aqaurium-outfitters website click fish school then click nano reef if you want to try one. It’s a free 6 week instructional.

Hello Reefthuz, my name is Joel. First off your doing amazing job on all your tanks. I’m a noob at freshwater tanks and i have never attempted on salt water…….even tho this video makes me want to. But my question is what the difference between a 20 gallon tank and a Nano 20 gallon tank. Also how long should one wait to put life in a salt water tank?????

Thanks for the tank compliment. However I disagree. Most fishes with the exception of Gobies and Damsels have greatly reduced growth rates in any closed system under 1,000 gallons compared to the wild. Even many clown fishes do not reach the same size of their wild counterparts in captivity. As opposed to starving a bunch of snails to death all my nano tanks have just a handful of snails and a tiny tang for algae control in them which I always move to a larger tank once they get too big.

Nice tank… but what is that Tang doing in there? You have to understand Tangs like to swim in open space… you know better… your fish grew 2 inches in a few years? Definitely going to stunt the Tang’s growth. I had my Tang in my 55 gallon starting at 1 inch and he grew much more than 2 inches within a year… You are basically torturing your Tang…

  5. ReefThuZ says:

That will take some time. The myth about fish growing to the size of the tank is somewhat true in that Nitrates act as growth inhibitors in fish slowing their growth rate. So typically the smaller the tank the more the presence of nitrates thus slower growth. This does not mean the fish is unhealthy. My Regal is 5 yrs old and went from 1″ to about 3.5″ in this time. If you have one get too big just catch him and swap for a smaller one. Just make sure you start with a tiny one 1-2″.

Thanks :] What will happen when your tang gets too big?

A few tips: 1. Most important find one person/store to give you advice. If you ask 10 people a question in this hobby you will get ten different answers. 2. keep the salt level at 1.025. 3. Check the pH,KH and Nitrates every week. 4. Find and use Nutri Sea Water at a local store. Makes a huge difference. 5. Add corals first wait as long as possible to add fish.
Hand pick tiny tangs, angels, etc and they do very well. Keep ur tank at the parameters listed in the info on this video.

Wow This tank is absolutely stunning! How do you keep your glass so clean with all of the corals around it? I want to add more rock and corals to my 24gal but every time I place them near the glass I cant scrub the algae that grows on the glass. I only leave my lights on for 5-6 hours a day. Is that to long? Also, where did you learn how to rock scape and coral place to make it look so professional? Any ideas??
