I am planning to get a baby garter snake (albino checkered, but that really doesn’t matter) and i was wondering if she got out could she eat my other pets? I plan to keep her in my room and i also have 2 baby (2 1/2 months old) degus which are a little bigger then a full grown fat gerbil right now and should double in size yet, 2 guinea pigs, a lionhead rabbit, a beta, and a parakeet. the fish is in a bowl obviously, but the others have wire cages. I will also have a fish bowl with a bunch of minnows in it for my snakes food. (we found out there’s a bait shop in town that sells several varieties of minnows so no long trips for her food. YAY)
My brother also has 2 young pet rats, 3 old (like 2 1/2 with graying fur) pet mice, a beta, and a guinea pig. His beta is in a covered bowl, but the others also have wire cages except one mouse is in an aquarium type house.
We also have a cat (obviously the cats gonna win there though), a kitten, two rabbits in the office (a dwarf and a holland lop), one rabbit that lives in the entry way/ by the kitchen (holland lop/ ???? mix) and 6 outside rabbits that live in the basement in the winter (1 lionhead, 1 silver martin, 1 mini rex, 1 dwarf, 1 holland lop, and 1 baby palomino/ new zealand mix)
I am mostly worried about Quito my parakeet. We already had a parakeet killed by our cat (we had to find her a home without small animals because she had already killed a pet rabbit and a few baby rabbits that had gotten out, about pinkie mouse age and that was my moms last straw, she was also bad with kids and my mom has a daycare.) And i am also worried about my brothers mice although by the time it is big enough to eat them they will probably have died of old age. I do not think she could eat a degu either, but am i wrong? I am saying she, but i have no idea what ill get. i don’t think petco sexes their snakes anyway.
Please do not say i have too many pets already. They are not all mine and they are all loved all the time by the daycare. The least friendly pets i have are my parakeet Quito (he is still young and wasn’t at all tamed when i got him a few months ago, and my degus who are still young and were not tame when i got them either. Both groups are able to be held, the degus are very jumpy and can’t sit still and don’t particularly like me, but do not bite. Quito steps up and comes out to play, but has his bad days where he bites and doesn’t like me, but everyone has bad days.)
I know there are breeders out there who do not even tame the babies and have a hundred or more animals. I also know there are people that have 40 some reptiles on here that love and ‘play’ with them all. I love my pets and have wanted a reptile for a very long time. I wanted a lizard, but my host sister (she was from spain and lived with me for a month) loved snakes and i think they are super cute and fun. I also want to get a pet i can hold when i chose, but is okay going a day or a few without being held. (my parakeet demands hours out of his cage playing daily or he gets mad and cries and squawks, he is out right now and is having a great time playing in the guinea pigs cage, he likes animals that are bigger then him, he even plays with my kitten, My rabbit gets let out to run around my room almost daily, the guinea pigs get their cage left open and the degus get playtime) so i want something that is fun to handle, but doesn’t need to roam my room for hours on end.
So anyway will my snake be able to hurt my other pets if she gets out? and will i be good if i have a piece of duct tape on each side of the top holding it down?
