My Fish Like To Hide Out In The Back Of Their Tank When I Come Near. Is This Normal?

I checked the levels and everything and i just cleaned the tank i also have a filter int the tank i clean regularly. I have 3 gold fish about 4 inches long from nose to tail and i use to have a beta in the tank and they got along fine but it died maybe 2 months ago and i recently bought 4 smaller gold fish and put them in the tank with the big ones. They get along great and they seem to like each other but every time i come near the tank the three big ones swim to the back of the tank and it freaks out the little ones. If i stay still long enough they come out from hiding but when i move they go back to hiding. Is this normal or should i be worried? Is there something i can do to help them?

Q&A: Turtle Aquarium Filter?

Question by Dylan: Turtle Aquarium Filter?

Unless you completely overdid it, a filter isn’t really capable of sucking up much sand. Just make sure its not too close to the bottom.

I Have No Ideas: What Size And What Item Can I Get Inexpensively As Basin For Dog Water Bowl?

Want to use an 11″ (28mm) bottle with holes in bottom to hold water reservoir. I have the bottle, will use an aquarium recirculating filter to keep water fresh. Need something big for the basin, to allow two big dogs’ heads to come & lap.
So whole thing needs to be about 3 feet (1 meter more or less) and 6 to 8 inches (15 – 20 mm) in diameter. With a filter I think 6″ deep (15 mm) would be tasty to dogs.
I don’t know what sort of thing to look for, what store to visit, or what on-line sites,
Will have one inside, one outside on sunny side in winter so water should stay liquid most of the daylight hours. I intend to ferry water from inside in gallon plastic (or glass) bottles, outside tap situation is complicated, ineffective right now.
For the indoor-only cats I have a 9″ (22mm) old heavy aluminum “Dutch oven” into which I intend to insert a 1/2 gallon (1.9 liter?) bottle as reservoir, and use recirculating filter. Any comments, helpful suggestions?
Thank you for helping all of us here!

Lots Of Tropical Aquarium Questions, 10 Points?

-i’m thinking 7 neon tetras, 5 platys for a 10 gallon what’s a good bottom feeder for that? preferably non-schooling catfish species, not a pleco
-what fish should i introduce first? i’ll be adding food to the empty tank to start the cycle
-i have a small agitation filter, can i use a regular sponge inside instead of the regular mesh filters?
-are there any chemical issues to deal with besides metals and chlorine in tap water, pH, and the whole nitrogen cycle deal?
-how should i deal with chlorine and metals when replacing water vacuumed out during gravel cleaning?
-does vividly colored gravel stress fish?
I’ll check for conversation

Q&A: aquarium filter change?

Question by akosikiev123: aquarium filter change?
suppose i only have one sponge filter(which i really only have on and i dont want to buy another) and i want to replace the filter media – the sponge – ,how do i do it when i want to preserve the good bacteria(the one responsible for the tank cycling or something)?

its hard to do, go on amazon.com, filter sponges are cheap, if you dont replace it you could start getting build up of ammonia nitrate and nitrite which are all bad for a tank

How Do I Treat A Sick/hurt Betta Fish?

My fish got sucked up into the new aquarium filter the other day. Some of his fins were torn off. Since then he has been swimming sideways towards the top of tank – sometimes even inverting and laying on the plant in the tank. I feel bad – several of the fins not torn off have fallen off – his tail looks mangled. I don’t know what to do to make him feel better. It doesn’t look it’s rotting yet…just falling apart. Also – his head area looks more silver than normal – is he dying?

Is It Ok To Put A Snail With My Betta?

I have a betta fish in a 1/2 or 1 gallon tank. I don’t really know. He has a real plant, pretty jems, and I feed him the right food. I heard that snails will help the tank stay clean. I just wanted to know if my betta will eat it? If it can live in this size tank? If it needs special food? Etc. Thanks!
