Algae Eating Fish That Can Live With Sun Perch?

I have 5 little sun perch in my 40 gallong aquarium. They are quite aggressive and try to kill everything I put in the tank. I need a algae eating fish to put in the tank to keep it cleaner. Anyone know a good one that the sun perch wouldn’t kill?

A long time was spent sorting this tank out to suit all the different fish that are in it. Hope that it was worth it, and that you enjoy the video :)

Q&A: Freshwater aquarium filter?

Question by akosikiev123: Freshwater aquarium filter?
I have a tank about 25-30 US gals. I’m confused whether to get a (1st confusion) powerhead or an air pump and (2nd confusion) either a hang on external filter o the classic external filter.

you don’t need a power head if you want to get an air pump that is ok but not necessary regarding filters i use external filters my tanks are bigger but i find they are more efficient and do a good job i use Fluval filters and rena filster filters both excellent

“Remove Carbon from filter for medication” but doesn’t that kill beneficial bacteria?

Question by just_another_guy: “Remove Carbon from filter for medication” but doesn’t that kill beneficial bacteria?
My silver dollars have an infection so I am using melafix to treat them.

When I read forums, everyone seems to say that the carbon should be removed from filter during medication, otherwise it will remove the medication from the water…which makes sense.

However, I was under the impression that the carbon actually provides the large surface area for the precious beneficial nitrifying bacteria to live in. I also read that the filter should be running all the time so that this bacteria doesn’t die from the filter being dry/ lack of oxygen.

So if you are removing the carbon during medication, aren’t you essentially killing the beneficial bacteria? Will you be restarting the whole nitrogen cycle if you took them out and put them back after a few days?

I know I can put the fishes in a quarantine tank and do this whole thing separately, but I am just curious.

The whole point of carbon filtration is chemical. What you are talking about is biological filtration which is usually a bio-wheel or other ceramic media that is porous which holds the benefical bacteria.

Carbon, like you said will remove the medication from the water which is why it needs to be removed. Carbon basically clears the water and removes odor from the water. It really is not for biological filtration so you dont need to worry about removing it from the water.

Help!! Guppies Possibly Dying!?!?!?

Today i put my guppies into their new 10 gallon tank. Before they were in a 1 gallon bowl and 2 gallon tank- which was to small so i upgraded. Yesterday i set it up and let it run for 24 hours then put the fish in today. They don’t seem to be doing well at all they seem horrible and i don’t know why. i have an undergravel filter fit for like a 2-3 gallon tank in there and another filter (not undergravel) which i don’t know the “type” of (im not much of an expert) that is fit for 5-6 gallons. It seems to be making a little bit of a current in there which they don’t like very much, but i need the filter in there. I also have an airstone in there so the undergravel plus airstone should be making plenty of airation for them… They don’t seem well now, before they were very happy. i aclimatized them right… i floated them in the new tank and dumped in a little water from the tank then floated them some more… etc. There are plenty of plants and decorations in there for them to hide in and gravel. The water is also dechlorinized so i don’t know what the issue could possibly be. There aren’t many fish in there. Three normal sized guppys that you would buy at the pet store and 6 very small “feeder” guppies that i would say probably like 3 would make the same amount of waste that one normal sized guppy would make. So I guess you could say that there are “about 5″ guppies in there if that helps. All that they do is sit at the surface in one big Clump of guppies and don’t move… they also won’t eat any food at all for some reason. I don’t know what happened to all to them and i’m worried that they might die here soon. What is going on? does anyone know? And oh ya i have a heater now and aquarium slat in there- before there tank/bowl wasn’t heated if that has anything to do with it but acclimatizing them should’ve been fine with that. Anyways please help i don’t know whats wrong.!
