Do I need a sponge filter for my aquarium?

Question by Ricky: Do I need a sponge filter for my aquarium?
I recently bout a 46 gallon Bow front aquarium and I have a filter designed for a 55 gallon tank. You think this is enough filtration? I also bought a dual sponge filter. What would the purpose of that be in a 46 gallon tank? Its air driven so would it even do anything? What would It be good for or should I just take it out? And lastly I have a sand aistone bout 12 inch long on the left side of my tank with a tetra 40 pump. ALL my fish tend to stay on the right side of the aquarium. Is this too much flow?

An old saying prevent is always better than cure if we can choose for a better filtration in the fish tank and why not? It can stop more other small or tiny dirt in the fish tank. But for sure maintenance and cleaning for it is also important so just give it a go.And good luck.

Wild Caught Gouramis…….pure Breed.?

hello
I live in North Eastern India
A few months back I managed to net 6 brilliantly colord blue and orange striped gouramis (later found out that they were giant gouramis) from our rice field.
The sizes are from 2.5cm to as big as 12cm, male and female mixed.
they are doing really well in my aquarium and i take good care of them (I am a veteran aquarium hobbyist).
But now I have to move out of this place and go to another part of the country.
So I would like to sell these excellent pure breed specimens ASAP.
Can anyone tell me where I can sell these fish.
Any website or any breeder you know?
Thank you.
I can ship to any where in the world as long my cuties are taken good care of.

Help! Whats With This Brown Algae!?

Okay I have a lovely TopFin 16 gallon tank. I have 5 guppies, 3 neon tettras, 2 skirt tettras, and 3 red minor tettras, then I have 1 ghost shrimp. I feed them Nutrafin Max tropical fish food and sometimes TettraMin as a treat. I have had this tank for about a year now and I cant seem to get rid of this freakin brown algae!! I clean my tank once a week and still no improvement, I feed my fish a little bit twice a day and they gobble it all up. I have live plants so I dont want to kill them with any chemicals, why is this brown algae happening? Its so annoying and very time consumeing when it shouldent be. Oh and I have a power filter 20 with my tank too, by Topfin. (is it just me or is Topfin just a bad brand?) When I had a few goldfish a while ago I had a Marineland tank and no issue with the brown algae. -sigh- please help me!!!! Im so frustrated!

Is an aquarium overflow a filter?

Question by Coasterfan86: Is an aquarium overflow a filter?

Best answer:

Answer by Ianab
Nope.

An overflow is used to connect a sump filter to the tank. A sump filter is an extra tank that sits below your main tank and contains filter media, and whatever other gadgets you want to add. A return pump sends water back to the tank, and when the tank level rises the overflow lets water flow back to the sump.

A sump filter doesn’t work properly without some sort of overflow to control the level in the tank.

How Much Aquarium Salt Should I Add To These Two Tanks?

Okey dokey, so I had four guppies and three platys in a twenty gallon tank. I’d had the guppies for almost a month, and suddenly they all got sick at the same and three of the four died within two days. That was two days ago, and the one is still holding on, I don’t think he ever had it as bad as the others, but I want to keep him alive. I am going to add some aquarium salt to try and help (I think they have fin rot, and the platys are all fine. I don’t want to add medication to the tank), but I don’t know how much I should add. Does the power of the filtration matter, because it’s a pretty powerful filter compared to the size of the tank (the filter would work for a 20-50 gallon tank, and, as stated earlier, it’s just a twenty gallon).
Next tank, a five gallon, heated and filtered, tank with a male halfmoon betta in it. He bit off an entire (very large) section of his tail a week ago, and it’s slowly starting to grow back, but I think he may have been stressed out and the aquarium salt would not only help regrowth and prevent fin rot but it would also keep his stress levels down. How much for that one? Once again, the filter is for 5-10 gallons, so (since it’s only a five gallon) I guess the filter is moderately powerful for the tank.
